Which is easier?

I'm just starting out as a video producer guy.

I'm shooting a restaraunt commercial. I was wondering, should I invite background extras to fill the background or just ask the people who are there to sign release forms.

Again, I'm very new to this, so just wondering how inconvient, unlikely it would be for 20 people to agree to be filmed while they're trying to each lunch.

Extras is easier, but obviously cost more money

From the restaurant's point of view, you are disturbing their customers dining experience by filming while they eat. Or you might have 12 who agree but 8 who don't. And since they have never been on camera before some of them WILL look into your lense regardless of how many times you tell them not to.

Unless you plan on doing a quick hit and run from a distance where faces are unidentifiable then perhaps you don't need to go through the hassle of release forms etc...

Your always better off with payed extras. It is far easier to ask them to "sit and stay" if there is compensation involved. Plus you can get the right mix of people.

See the Tony Roma's spot on my website under commercials.

Of course, you could talk to the restaurant owner and see if he/she will comp their meals in exchange for their releases ;)

I'd say extras every time, members of the public will have a lot less reason to hang around if things start taking too long. Extras will be there because they want to!

you can easily transform that into a marketing campaign , with an add into newspaper for "free lunch", so it turns into benefits for the restaurant.
you pay the add and do the casting, they offer the meal.

I guarantee that if you use the patrons of the restaurant they will not stop staring into the camera. So think about that.
