Which is better?

I was lookin around the internet and i read the specs on Combustion 4. It's the same as After Effects...being a compositing program with all those 3D features and what not.

But the question is....which is better/easier to use?

Depends on your preferences, and workload. After Effects is built like an Adobe program, so if you like the Photoshop-like interface, then you'll feel at home with After Effects. Combustion is really a user interface of it's own design, but it works beautifully as long as you learn it. Both are layer-based compositors and both are really powerful programs. In my opinion Adobe is a little bit better when working with text (animated text, text effects, etc.), but Combustion is a little better when working with compositing.

Personally I prefer Combustion, but having both programs in your toolbox eventually isn't a bad idea. Both programs also offer 30-day free trial downloads, so it would be better to try them both out instead of taking my word for it. :)

Thanks for the advice..ill try both programs.

But how would Combustion be 'better' when working with composites?

Combustion has inherited features from Discreet's higher-end systems. Flint, Inferno, those guys. So in my opinion the Discreet Keyer is a better quality keyer than the one that's in After Effects. Combustion can allow you to view the composites in a schematic view which is similar to Shake's nodes and noodles (but not nearly as powerful). It's a different way of looking at layers which I find particularly helpful. Discreet's tracker is one of the best I've ever used. Combustion has built-in timewarp and morph features (which I don't think After Effects has).

Stuff like that. Plus Combustion can use just about any Affter Effects plug-in, so you have added functionality there.

He he he. That would throw a wrench into this thread. :) Combustion is more stable / faster on PC than Mac. Plus the Mac version of C4 isn't even out yet.

blckhawk542 aren't you getting a mac?

I want to....but i dont have 5,000 dollars in my back pocket...plus...i dont have a job yet...so ye. My parents definitly wouldnt buy me it either. Im guessing you read that other thread where I was asking about the Mac editing products.

So at the moment...no im not getting a mac...i wish i did...and so now ive decided to get a compositing program for PC. And I wasnt sure to which to choose from...After Effects or Combustion 4.

Plus from what Krestofire said...it seems that Combustion would be the better product...but then again...he said AE is like any other Adobe product..and im used to Photoshop and Illustrator...so it would be different work flow if i choose combustion...but im up for anything new.

And that's why Krestofre said to download the demo of both products before you buy.
