Which G5?

I am putting together a list of equipment for my documentary film and am looking to buy final cut pro and a mac. Is there a difference between buying a G5 dual or single? Does the new final cut pro work better with one or the other other than the obvious factor of speed?

Re: Which G5?

Buy dual. Not only is FCP (and other Production Suite Apps) optimized for use with dual-proc machines, and not only will it speed up your workflow if using multiple apps at once, but the new single 1.8 Ghz G5 is lacking 300 mhz of frontside bus (600 mhz as opposed to 900 per processor on the dual).

Re: Which G5?

Oh yeah, and buy the dual 2 Ghz. Best bang for your buck, given the specs and the fact that the dual-2.5 is still on back order. I just checked on that earlier this week. Besides, you don't want to get stuck with what will (hopefully) be Apple's only liquid-cooled system.

Re: Which G5?

good advice on buying dual. You might want to check the Apple store and see if you can find a 2.0 dual 1st generation refurb. Has a better video card (9600) plus space for up to 8gigs of RAM, whereas the "new" 2.0 is limited to 4 gigs and ships with 5200 vid card. They show up fairly regular for 2K, I picked one up a couple of months ago and have had no problems... plus 8) it came with an extra 512MB of RAM for free!

The new dual-2.0 still has up to 8 GB of RAM. I just checked. You may have been looking at the new dual-1.8. It's true about the video card though.

Don't forget, if your a student, your qualified to apply for the student discount. I think it knocks off 300 dollars or so.
