Which frame rate for action sequence

I'm looking at shooting an action short film soon where our actor is shooting out a knee complete with exploding prosthetic knee, blood, bone, the whole works.

What I'm not sure on is what is the best frame rate to get this at.
My HVX will only do 60fps, however there's a possibility of using a Red, which might go to 100fps+?

Otherwise I might have to go to 35mm 120fps, which is horrendously expensive.
While 120fps should get everything and has the option to respeed in post, I'd rather go for a cheaper option.

Any suggestions?

thanks,
Geoff

I think you pretty much covered your options if your looking for slomo. I'd shoot as amny cameras as possible to get different angles, sounds like it should be a pretty cool shot.

While some slow mo will enhance the effect, if you go overboard, it'll just give the viewer more time to spot any less convincing elements of the effect...

Shoot it at 60 fps with a shutter speed of about 1/1000th. I think that'd look cool, unless you want it really slow. But if it's an action scene, and you want to keep the intensity up, I'd say 60fps is fine.

I'm a fan of less is more. Like Limey said, if you put it front and center it may take away from it as a "spice" and make it a "spotlight". (if that made any sense).
