Which Four Filters?

You've spent all your money on a new camera and some other gear and then you realize that you forgot to budget for filter$. You figure that you can afford to buy one new filter per month for four months. After that, your wife is very likely to dump you.

Your work is 1/3 exteriors and 2/3 fairly well lit interiors. Which four filters do you buy, and in what order of priority?

(The above scenario is entirely fictitious and does not refer to any person, living or dead, especially not me.)

lol! :D

What sort of scenes would you be shooting though? You'd probably want a polarizer, and maybe some diffusion filters...but it really depends on what look you're going for on the specific project...

Re: Which Four Filters?

Yes.. Magic Bullet does a decent job of replicating color filters, however you cant fake a polarizer or a soft net..

We put 30+ color and different diffusion filters in front of the DVX in the filter test DVD http://www.dvxuser.com/articles/dvd/ so if you wanna spend 10 bucks you can get an idea what each filter looks like on the DVX before you spend your cash on buying glass.

That said, I would say a UV, Polarizer and maybe Antique suede would be my top 3.

Re: Which Four Filters?

Heh heh...

I ended up going with the following for heavy outdoor & some indoor shooting:

  • UV - 72mm
  • SoftFX 1/2 - 72mm
  • Polarizer - 4" x 4"
  • ND .6 - 4" x 4"

I'd only use one of the 72mm's at a time typically, as more will start vignetting at full wide zoom. The 4"x 4" filters sit nicely in a Matteblox and are easy to pop in and out as needed, whereas the 72mm's would stay put for most of a shoot. If the shoot needs the SoftFX it's there for most of the time, and if not the UV protects the lens.

Take it with a grain of salt... I'm still working on my first project. ::)

Re: Which Four Filters?

my four favourite filters are:

- Tiffen Warm UV 17
- Tiffen Circular Ultra Polarizer
- 1/2 Black Pro Mist
- .6 ND Grad

all 4 x 4 used on Chrosziel mattebox
