Which formats again?

Sorry to ask this, for some reason I'm having trouble locking the info down.

I'm asking what the frame sizes are for Academy, Super35, Vista, etc.

There's supposed to be an even smaller frame than Academy, correct?

Academy 4k = 4096 x 2988
Vista Vision 4k = 4096 x 2732
Super 35 4k = 4096 x 1708

This is from the camera settings in Lightwave 3d which give accurate pixel dimensions afaik. Those are all 1.0 aspect.

There are a bunch of versons of the ones you listed, like:
1.66, 1.78, 1.85 all with 3K, 4K and 4K cineon options.

Kholi, im glad you said something about this, because I was just about to ask any day now.. Im still not quite sure what Jock put down means, and I still don't know what kind of framing Im getting when I am shooting with my DVX, but hey, im usually in the dark anyways.

I am just going to add the dimensions in mm
Academy 4k = 4096 x 2988
22 mm by 16 mm
Vista Vision 4k = 4096 x 2732
(37.72 mm by 24.92 mm)
Super 35 4k = 4096 x 1708
(24.89 mm by 18.67 mm)

This is from the camera settings in Lightwave 3d which give accurate pixel dimensions afaik. Those are all 1.0 aspect.

1.66, 1.78, 1.85 all with 3K, 4K and 4K cineon options.

Read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/35_mm_film

That was a great link on wikipedia.
I now realize clearly that Academy is 2/3 of full SLR image size.

24mm wide compared to 36mm. Vistavision is very close to full SLR.

Thus a 35mm lens at Academy is roughly equiv to a 52mm SLR in viewing angle.
That gives rough equivs of

Adacdemy > SLR
24mm > 35mm
35mm>50mm
50mm>75MM
etc

I'm trying to figure out the general affects for DOF so you could use a chart. But that's assuming DOF in film matches it on any one adapter screen which I doubt.

zooming in to 27.3mm on an HVX gives you....academy? is this right? what would i zoom in to if i wanted to get one of the other formats?

I guess it's the same multiplication factor of about 1.5 when you compare plain 35mm still to DX digital format. Academy would then roughly match the digital DX format. So when I'm using my manual Nikon lenses with a 35mm adapter, Academy would then match the FOV and DOF of the same lenses used with my Nikon D200.
