i shoot video on a 7d, and i take the .mov h.264 file, and i transcode it with mpeg streamclip using the avid codec DNxHD...

i edit and do my editing and grading...

what is the best format to export to for dvd? or the best way to go about it?

i tried exporting to mpeg 2, heres the settings i tried

mpeg2
720x480
progressive frame
aspect pixle (square pixles 1.00)
10 mbps
8-bit rendering(as its lower bitrate)

and then i use xilisoft dvd creator, or adobe encore...looks decent, but its not true widescreen like a dvd that you purchase...on tv it is...but not when played back on the computer...

plus it just doesnt hold up as well as i would hope for...

any suggestions?

It's not widescreen because you set square pixels in the settings

DVD's are either 16:9 or 4:3. (they don't use square pixels)

ok it looked like when i previewed the original and then the output, only square pixles kept it the same, 16:9 and 4:3 changed it and moved it (squished) sort of

widescreen and 4:3 dont work, they display wide but inside of sidebars like its a formatted image

almost like a full screen dvd would look with sidebars, but then also as if it was cropped to widescreen too...

when i export as square pixles, it shows up as widescreen properly...

whats the proper way to do this, and which codec?

I don't know the proper way to tell you how to do this in your chosen software. BUT, DVDs only accept ONE kind of codec... and that is Mpeg2. So use whatever the default template is for DVD Widescreen export in Premiere. That should go into Encore just fine and make you a real widescreen DVD.

Oh, and DVDs have bitrate limits too. You can't go much over 9Mbps video+audio together. So use 8.5 Mbps as a target for the video and you should be safe.

i just figured out that no matter what format is exported....during the DVD authoring process the video files have to be converted to DVD in the "pan and scan" format only...

all other formats play widescreen inside of a sidebar, the pan and scan plays widescreen on all tvs...
