Which director would you like to take over the Batman franchise?

I read somewhere Chris Nolan will no longer direct Batman after The Dark Knight Rises (could be a marketing gimmick to hype TDKR). If it is indeed true, who would you like to take over the Batman franchise as Director and be the new Batman since Christian Bale has stated he won't be Wayne or Batman without Nolan.

And if they do a reboot (which is utterly, utterly ridiculous in my view), how would you apply logic to this move?

Well, if they HAVE to do a reboot, or more films, I suggest that they let John Waters take a crack at it! I am sure the results would be interesting!!

David Cronenberg or Ridley Scott.

//edit: Assuming the screenplay was also along these lines.

I will do that for sure. Are these in German language films originally ? If so I prefer the original foreign language with English sub titles.

I'll look for one of those initially and let you know in a few days.

Thanks.

Darren Aronofsky would be a great choice to take over after Nolan.

If I'm not mistaken Darren Aronofsky was on board for Batman Begins before Nolan, and did a bunch of development work with Frank Miller, but the studio felt his vision for Batman was too dark, so he was ditched and Nolan was brought on board.

I agree, John Waters could take it back to the sixties Batman and Robin days. Shame Divine has passed, she would have made an interesting cat woman :(

Divine would have made a very interesting Cat Woman... but I guess we would now have to SETTLE for Traci Lords!... Ah, shucks... Darn! :)

Yes, these are German with subs - some of the DVD releases are dubbed... but I agree with you, much prefer subtitles :)

Films I listed are all favorites of mine by Herzog and just realized they all star Klaus Kinski. The Director had a turbulent on/off friendship with the actor that is documented to great effect in 'My Best Fiend' (that is 'fiend' not friend ;)

Back on subject, I could really see him doing an interesting take on Batman... as the inner turmoil and range/guilt/anger of Wayne would be something herzog could bring out. Not that it'll ever happen... but it'd be fun to consider what it would be like!

Herzog's done US movies - like the remake of bad Lieutenant (with Cage) or Rescue Dawn (with Bale).

I love Herzog (I have a number of his box sets for his documentaries and movies) - but I don't think he'd be the choice for the Batman movies. Anyone noticed that Herzog documentaries are increasingly about Herzog (irrespective of the subject matter)?

Last time the franchise was handed over from one director to another (from Tim Burton & Michael Keaton to Joel Schumacher & Val Kilmer) the franchise when into a nosedive that it didn't recover from. George Clooney, as he freely admits, killed it outright. So if both Nolan and Bale are out after this then they should let it sit for a decade and then reboot it for the next generation of teenagers.

Incidentally; who was the best Batman?
1) Adam West (campy and funny)
2) Michael Keaton (dark but funny - at the time he was cast everyone thought Burton was mad, but it was an inspired choice)
3) Val Kilmer (just plain weird and fluroescent)
4) George Clooney (what!? are those your nipples sir?)
5) Christian Bale (dark and not funny)
