Which color calibration tool to buy?

Hi there,

I shoot video(mostly) and some stills. I just color corrected a video on my macbook pro and the colors looked totally different on my Samsung Galaxy s6. This reminded me that I need to get a color calibration tool like the X-rite- color munki. Do you guys have any tips on which way to go? I have a Macbook pro, Small hd 502, and a dell external monitor. Thank you!

The Xrite products are a good way to go, haven't used the ColorMunki, but I've used previous products including the i1 Pro spectro.

I use the Colormunki Display which goes on sale for around $99 every once in a while (there was a rebate that got it down to around $80 at some point) and it works great with displayCal which is very powerful opensource software I'd recommend over any of the bundled software. It seems the Colormunki Display is the best value with the best displaycal support, but I could be wrong. Apparently the i1 Display Pro is better but mostly just because it's faster. The more expensive ones may be better suited for if you calibrate a lot of monitors frequently, but a slow calibrater isn't a big deal if you are mostly just doing one or two displays every couple weeks/months...

I'm not sure if you want a monitor calibration tool, or a color reference chart. If it's a color reference chart...

I use the Datacolor Spydercheckr, which I prefer because it has a row of skin-tone patches. But it's just personal preference, they're similar enough anyway. BTW it saved my butt this past weekend, shooting an event with lights that were way below the 2500K limit of my camera (I shot 2500K and everything is still orange, having a sample of the spydercheckr helped me correct the WB and then adjust the colors until they are passable; all other video guys at the event are still crying over the lights, photogs went for super-strong-flash and didn't suffer as much).
