Hello, i want to buy a new camera, I actually own a canon gl1 and I have done a lot with this little camera, i want to take the next step and buy something more profesional, my budget is at 5000-6000 dlls.
Im searching for great optics, and image controls, because a love dp's stuff and play a lot with the settings.
I will be using the camera to do music videos, tv spots, all, using profesional lighting.
Which camera will bring me more image quality, better manual controls and better optics.
I usually do a lot of CC on after effects, i want a camera that can give me 4 years minimum of great performance.
Can someone give your opinion on de cameras from this budget?

Thanks.

Do you already own an HD editing system?

The HVX200 is a great choice but your going to need to buy P2 cards as well. I'd say go with the DVX100b and buy a nice matte box for it and maybe a tripod.

Also, take a look at the 3 way shoot out article. (http://dvxuser.com/articles/shoot3/)
It compares the Sony HDV FX1, DVX100a, and Canon XL2 which are all in your price range.

How about tha new JVC GY-HD100U?
Can i edit HDV on a powerbook? what else do I need no edit HDV? how superior is this format from mini dv?

Honestly I don't know much about the HD100 so I can't give you an opinion. Although I did hold the camera for a few minutes and its very sexy.

I've heard good things about them though.

Keep in mind stepping up to HD has a LOT more involved then just a new camera. The extra expenses would cripple you on your budget. If your budget is under 6K I would stick with a great SD unit. DVX is naturally good, but if you plan on sports as mentioned, the XL2 could rock your world.

the DVX 100 may be a step up from GL1 but it is a SMALL step -
have you thought of stepping away from hand size camera's to a camera with 1/2 " or 2/3" CCD's ? you could buy new or get alot more for your $ buying used ...

Smaller then 10k of HD equip sure, but other then that the statement is pretty off the mark IMO

I like to see any 1/4" GL user who upgraded to a DVX saying it's "not much difference"... if you forget the 24P, which is hard to, even @ 60i it's a far better camera with way, way more features and manual controls. Sounds like ferenes knows his way around his camera and wants more:
"...camera will bring me more image quality, better manual controls and better optics."

...I bet he would see a massive dif between the two in 10 minutes. be it DVX or XL2

I think this is wildy dependent on who you ask....

Well if you ask someone who has'nt a clue what they're talking about...

I see you have done your homework.
I Grade it an F!!!!!!!

ferenes; DISREGARD THIS POST FROM DONATELLO; IT HOLDS ZERO WEIGHT

If you're interested, I'm going to be selling my JVC DV500. It has 1/2" CCD's and a professional layout with all the controls you could ask for. I also have a Canon 19x internal focus lens that has beautiful optics (huge step up from the Fujinon that normally comes with the camera). This is a great camera for industrials, sports etc.. I can put a package together for you with a case, tripod, the fujinon lens and the Canon lens that would easily fit within your budget.

if you're interested, send me a private message and I'll fill you in on the details.

The GL1/XM1 is an awesome little camera.

Considering its age it's just fantastic. Mine is still going strong after 5 years, although it doesn't get as much use as it used to.
