Which adapter works best with Sony pmw-ex1?

Extreme/ Elite with EX1 kit works perfectly with EX1/3

Ok..so I used a redrock m2 encore with an ex3 today..took 1080p footage away and its e2e didnt have a patch on Philips extreme footage, but I dont have enough cash to pay for elite at the moment...

question is,

Is it really that bad not having backfocus?
or can I get buy until my next vid pays up?

ps..im using just my fd primes if that makes any difference.

i got by without backfocus adjustment for a year on Extreme. It doesnt affect e to e. Disappointed to hear you didn't get good e2e with the EX1. Has anyone had good e2e with Redrock at all?

I'm not sure what Philip meant by - "doesn't effect e to e".

However my experience is similar.

I have an Extreme with a nikon mount and I was able to adjust my back focus perfectly. That's because the nikon mount has screws that allow you to push the mount away from the unit. That direction worked for me , but only after i had earlier used the wank wanky method of fiddling with pins inside the unit to move the screen further away. So it was a bit nasty but it now works perfectly. It would be hard to adjust on the fly, but most Nikon lenses are correct so its generally not a problem.

A friend of mine needed to move the mount closer and he just sent his back to letus and they fixed it. Another friend had a perfectly adjusted back-focus from the get go.

I don't know if their Canon mount has adjustments.

Did you get a good look at the corner to corner sharpness of the RR encore on the EX-1 when it was wide open?

Edge to Edge Lenny, the back focus as you know has no effect on edge to edge. It is just for getting proper focus at the correct marks, and sometimes it can stop you getting infinity at all.

It's just the Letus achromat that gives it rock solid edge to edge. Wonder why more manufacturers haven't seen what Letus have done and just copied it!

Come on Shoot 35 and Cinevate, please!

absolutely. get the extreme, it will most likely be fine! then save up for the back focus add on...or just enter my film competition by mid march and win an extreme!!

Philip - ah yes "e to e" "edge to edge", I was thinking in terms of audio "e to e".
I have the same disappointment and surprise as to why no one else has just copied what Letus did. Its been out a year.

That edge to edge ground glass photo with the M2 encore looks pretty awful.
Anyone have better/worse results with the Encore M2 and EX1/EX3??

El Presidente,

Also, are you using all Redrock gear in your build? Is it the full encore setup (M2e, microX encore, 72mm universal achromat)? Again, it doesn't look right. I've done something like six EX1/3 builds in the past month and I've *never* seen results that bad before.

One thing that makes it hard to tell what's going on is that you never want to set your backfocus without a lens. That 35mm lens projects light evenly over the cinescreen and allows you to stop down to set your backfocus, as we outline in our setup tutorials.

When you send over the information I asked for, please also include an image showing a focus chart or your backfocus with a lens attached to the M2. Another thing that perplexes the result is the uneven lighting, which again, the lack of lens doesn't help.

Thanks. Cheers!

Just let me know when you're in town so I can avo-- I mean meet you!!! Just kiddin'. I meet everyone!!!

We'll go to La Brea and shoot crack-house raids on HPX300's. Whoa wobble city.

i'll join you guys if you need backup with the raids. i live in santa monica so i need the excitement. also, i know of a camera house that will probably let us play with all the toys we can get our hands on. stay in touch.

Collimation absolutely does affect edge to edge sharpness! A lens with adjustment out of wack over 0.1mm will compromise sharpness (worse as you deviate) as well as throw your focus marks out. We've had the micro-collimation feature in the Brevis35 system for nearly 2 years now and after a great deal of resolution testing using about 10K worth of DSC labs equipment and our own mirror based alignment system, I can tell you that this adjustment is very critical to lens performance.

Many, many folks use our system with the EX1 with CFXL and are quite happy with their results. Is it perfect? No, but neither is any camera using an adapter ... and we are always finding room for improvement regardless of the camera. One thing that no one can argue with is the fact that so far all of our adapter enhancements have been 100% retrograde friendly with no need to purchase a new adapter... and as we go forward, a lot of folks are going to be happy about this. Studios like Stillmotion, Jason Magbanua, Kevin Shahinian etc. have been using both the EX1 and XH-A1 with the Brevis/CFXL for pretty much 100% of their commercial work. We're continually refining our adapter performance with the EX1 with the next-generation of performance enhancements coming either at NAB or, just after. We will be at NAB with our B4 multi-format relay which will of course be ported to the EX3. This is a perfect scenario for us as we are now able to completely replace the camera lens with a unit purpose designed for it's task...relaying an image from our adapter directly to the CCD or CMOS array!

A look at the forums, particularly with respect to folks having issues with Brand X adapter(s) will likely reveal that all is not as it seems when it comes to adapters, claims of performance and which opinions are truly impartial :-) Our EX1 shoot guide is a good start for folks looking to optimize their work with our adapter using CFXL and the EX1.

Cheers,
Dennis Wood.

Just concluded several SKYPE sessions with Ray and Patrick who are shooting with our very first EX1 phase 2 unit this weekend. I"m pretty sure a folks will be surprised with what we've done :-)

Is Mr. Bloom gonna get his hands on a M2e anytime soon? I really wanna see a review by him.

Yep - he has one now. I know Phil is busy on a number of shoots but hopefully he can weigh in here (or somewhere). Good stuff

Also I forgot to mention Martin Beeks has a great blog where he's tested just about every adapter out there in detail. Martin is certainly one of the most technically proficient and exacting DPs out there, and he gives his impressions on most of the available adapters.
