Whew...We did it.

Well...My partner and I decided to go for the Mac setup. We bought 2 brand new G5 dual 2ghz with 2gm ram and both FCP and DVD studio 2. Exciting stuff!

Can anyone offer me any advice with getting started with FCP? Links to tutorials or other helpful sites? THANKS!

Re: Whew...We did it.

This site is a good start. There are several Final Cut Pro forums on the web including one on the APPLE website under DISCUSSIONS. You should also look up articles from Ken Stone who has written articles about the DVX100 to FCP to Soundtrack and more. I don't have a direct link to his articles but you should be able to do a google search and find him.

Re: Whew...We did it.

When I first got FCP, I also bought a book or two to help me out, but I found they weren't helpful unless I wanted to find something specific to get directions on. The best way, I think, is to play with it and find friends who have it and work on something with them. You will learn more from from watching an experienced FCP person than you will by reading one of those books. But I am assuming if you are buying two Macs, you probably have some NLE experience. Good luck!

Re: Whew...We did it.

I do have some NLE experience but not on a Mac. Any other good sites or training references you all would recommend?

If you have the money, there are literally hundreds of NLE courses for FCP across the country each year. They can literally turn you into an expert in four days, and I highly reccomend them.

Or you can take a course at your local college. FCP is the most common NLE on the market.

Where are you located. If you are near one of the locations I teach at, I will give you and your partner a free day long instruction session.

I am in San Diego. Thanks for all the help Slapdragon. If I don't have the money for a full training what books/sites would you recommend I pick up?

My job is to teach young professionals the industry now, so this is simply an unpaid portion of my job.

I would get http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=bsq1rP95bJ&isbn=0941188914&itm=6

Digital Editing with Final Cut Pro 4: Professional Post Production Technique off the shelf.

I am also avidly waiting for this one:

Murch was the editor of Cold Harbor, and did it on four very basic G4 Power Macs.

Re: Whew...We did it.

Thanks for the links...Is that the only book I will need for now? Does it teach all the basics?

And then some. Oh, if you want to play with graphics, Sound Track, or the titler, you may need more books, but one is basically enough. Plus the manuals as reference are very complete.

Re: Whew...We did it.

Thanks again Slapdragon. I just ordered that book from BN and I can't wait to get started!

No problem.  Remember, we are here to help you.

I find undergraduates starting from zero take about two months to become proficient in the program, maybe a year to be good enough to hold down a gig. At justice, I was able to get a professional running with it in a week.

I plan on working really hard at learning the ins and outs. We are going to be doing a lot of testing with settings and 24p/30p/60I. If you think of any other resources fee free to post them :).

Re: Whew...We did it.

Read the books, cover to cover... you'll know more than 90% of the people that own FCP that never touch the books.

Don't waste your money on "tutorial DVD's" or "third party books"

Re: Whew...We did it.

Just went to the B&N Link re FCP 4

Here is what it said.

Digital Editing with Final Cut Pro 4: Professional Post Production Technique

From the Publisher
Used in conjunction with 12 steps of AA, Lowdown shows that being a parent or caregiver and being in recovery can be a win/win situation. An easy-to-use book on a complex subject: how to break the cycle of addiction in high-risk families.

Man, I've been an editor for along time but this was a whole new perspective... :o

Re: Whew...We did it.

Digital Film Tree has a few great FCP books, a basic as well as Advanced. They are in LA and have workshops as well. They have a great pedigree. They created Film Logic, the original software to use FCP in 24-Fps, as well set up the system that cut Cold Mountain. I have their advanced book, it is great.

Re: Whew...We did it.

I've got a bunch of FCP books... read them all.

One I found very helpful was Jerry Hofmann's book on FCP4. The entire book is spent editing a short. The best part about it is the VERY usefull tidbits and shortcuts you'll find yourself using all the time. Don't find those in the manual.

I'd also say to read everything on Ken Stone's page. Very helpful. Again, I've got a notebook full of those things.

Good luck,

CaptM

Re: Whew...We did it.

Hey... I noticed you got DVD Studio2.   You know you should be able to get a free (well shipping cost) upgrade to DVDStudio Version 3.  I just bought the full version and finished my first DVD using it tonight.  I really like it.  Very professional results (especially when doing your MPEG encodes with Compressor out of FCP).

BTW:  You mention books...I bought several and never seem to read them enough.  I am a visual learner and get a lot of out DVD tutorials and/or online.  Here is a link to a site that offers individual online training clips.  They cost around $2 a piece.  You can just pick and choose which ones you want to see.  They also have quite a few freebies.  The teacher is the same person that does the tutorials on the Apple site I believe.

Good luck!
