Where to start?

Here we go...
I think you may have covered this but I need to ask.
I was recently pitching an Idea to someone about a personal project. He liked what he saw and asked me to make him a demo for his company, something that he wants to make about 2 to 5 minutes to send his clients.
from there he is interested in cutting a 30/40 second commercial to air.
I'm creating a budget and writing a script for this. Generally speaking I was told to have him deposit my "cost" into an account so I can start to work. for the most part it will be a 2 camera shoot/light,grip truck, sound, and actors.

First question is what is included, considered my "cost"?

I will be producing, directing, and stunt coordinating. the only thing I really know is Stunt Coordinating. I think I can handle the rest, being its a smaller project.
I just want it to look top notch, I will bring the right people to do there part but I need to get paid before I start some of the more detailed legwork.

What, if any standard, percentage wise, do I ask for from this owner to get the project started? Maybe there isn't a Standard? I'm going of off common sense for the most part and covering my butt.
As a SAG Stunt player I'm used to walking on set doing the gig and walking off. I'm nervous but excited to do this and do it all. there is no deadline as of yet and the shoot will be very exciting to do.
I am learning all about pulling permits budgeting and preproduction and am loving the education I do however want to do it right.
I hope this question makes sense.

Humbly yours

I think you are taking the worng route, do you have a company? are you DBA?
do you have your own invoices? and a business account? how much are you charging him? has anyone ever done production for him?

yes I'll set up an LLC, don't know what DBA is, Will hire an accountant for tax stuff and such, and will keep my bankroll in-between my mattress...
yes of course I will have a business account.
I don't think anyone has worked with him on something like this before. I'm bringing in everyone I need and paying them accordingly. My long winded question was what percentage is generally asked for to get it started. I have heard from 50% to
whatever I need to cover my essential cost to get it going. is there a standard?

half down and half when the project is done is the norm unless somthing else is worked out before hand.

Thanks for the input. I was ball-parking that but wasn't sure.
Hopefully I'll have something to show in a month or so

Yeah 50-50 is standard.

Sometimes we won't do that, though, we ask for 100% upfront. If they don't like it they can honestly get lost. Our quality of work and professionalism should speak for itself and if 50% isn't enough to cover our costs then it's not enough to start their project. Otherwise we're left with a bunch of footage that's worth nothing to us and a bunch of bills.

In the case of this large corporate project we have upcoming, we'll probably ask for 100% upfront but settle for 75% upfront because that would be enough to cover our costs, though since I have a relationship with the CEO and President I'm not worried about receiving the cash, I mean literally 100% not worried, but it's just a matter of it being such a large project that we don't have the available funds to pay for it without the funding first.

I'd ask for 50%, though, given your situation.
