I don't think folks were planning on it's popularity, plus it is relatively new. I'm having a horrible trying to find a rental house with them in Seattle. Then again, I've only found one with an HPX170, too.
As a rental house I have a hard time justifying investing in HMC-150s. We already own plenty of HVX200s, HPX170s, HPX500s. The HMC while very attractive to our clients who are looking to purchase, really doesn't bring anything to the rental house table.
The only time I've rented one out is as a loaner to a prospective buyer.
Its not that it isnt a great camera, however, but that with its bigger cousins being as cheap as they are, where does the HMC150 fit in? Quality wise or feature wise it doesnt bring much to the table compared to an HPX170.
We're just now starting to get more demand for HPX170s, HVX200As...all of our original HVX200s are still renting out very strongly.
As demand for it increases I'm sure we'll pull a few into Rentals, but with the camera being so inexpensive to purchase, the demand to rent it really hasnt been there as far as I've been able to observe.
evsdan: for event shooters the HMC is the best camera. I'm not shooting a wedding with a bunch of P2 cards. Roscor Rental is in our area and they have the XLH1, HVX200, and some POS sony 1080i HDV cam.. I've already rented the XLH1 and they sucked so bad... I obviously can't shoot @ 1080i..
I concur with booggerg2. I own one HMC, but can't justify the 2nd or 3rd yet. The local place that rents the HPX170 is $300 w/8gig P2 card. 32gig P2 cards are $75/day. That's $450 or $900 depending on the wedding. I would assume that you would rent an HMC for similar to the DVX given their similar prices. That's half the cost to shoot a wedding over an HPX.
But I totally hear what you're saying, and figured that was the case. The camera was only released in October, and given the workflow issues over the established P2 workflow, I'm not surprised there isn't the demand yet to justify buying a few setups for rent.
