Where to find?

I know this has probably been covered somehwere, but I have searched through the posts for a bit and couldn't find what I was looking for. I am interested in an AT 4073a but my local pro audio store is more expensive then my budget can afford. Where is the best place to get this mic and other equipment. I need a boom pole and shockmount, cables, the works. Your help will be appreciated.

Re: Where to find?

Where are you located? The places I recommend you check out are Coffey Sound (that's where I work) in L.A. , Trew Audio in Nashville, or Gotham Sound in New York. We all pretty much do the same thing, so call around and see who gives you the best deal AND service.

Re: Where to find?

Most places have a 30 day return policy...at least we do anyway. Typically we'll take something back if it's defective, or not the right thing, but it has to be in new condition. If it's not in new condition, of if there is nothing wrong with a product and it was special ordered, you may get hit with a restocking fee.

The places that I mentioned are famous for customer service, and hand holding. You can go down to the shops and they will show you how to set everything up and troubleshoot any issues. If you are buying long distance, they are available by phone to answer any questions you may have. Most of them have people working there that have actually worked in the industry, and know what it's like out there. Big box houses that give stuff away typically have people off the street working there, and don't know much about the gear. Just for kicks, I called one of these places and asked some questions about a recorder they sold, and they just repeated the description off the website. When I had specific questions, they told me they didn't know and that I should just go to the manufacturer's website. When I told him I already did that, but had even more specific questions, he told me to call that manufacturer. That's bad customer service. Manufacturers hate it when dealers do that. Box houses justify the need for forums like this. If you notice, you never see anybody posting with "I just bought this at (insert name of place I listed in my first post) and I don't know how to use it".

Re: Where to find?

About the service you are absolutely correct. B&H is horrible at customer service. I use to buy from them for purchases that I was confident of not needing any help with in order to save a few bucks.

I have since made all my purchases from small houses even when I have to pay extra. I appreciate the support they offer and even though most purchases don't require it, I feel I should support their quality.

I would compare it to buying at Walmart or the mom & pop.

I have bought from 2 of the houses you mentioned and had great experiences but did not remember them or anyone other than B&H allowing you to return non-special order, pristine condition purchases without a restocking fee (15% can be quite a ding on expensive equipment).

Re: Where to find?

I have always thought B&H customer service was ok, nothing great, but ok.
I have never had any problems with returning stuff(I always go there to return them in person)
It is rare you find defective mics, especially amongst more expensive mics.
So buy it on line with confidence. ;)
