There won't be just one sound. You will be constructing a sequence of sounds that match visually what is seen and - hopefully - will add emotional impact.

You will need the initial "whoosh" of the machete being thrown by the protagonist, the sound of the machete leaving the throwers hand (with maybe a vocalization by the thrower - a grunt, a yell or just a breath dependent upon the emotion you want to evoke), the sound of the machete whirling through the air, the impact into the tree and the machete "ringing" or "boinging" (again dependent upon the emotion you want to evoke) after the impact. You may have to layer several sounds for each individual cue of the sound effects sequence to achieve exactly the desired visual and emotional impact.

Some pay-by-the-sound sites are sonomic.com and sounddogs.com.

Free sites include the freesound.org and ljudo.com.

Of course, you could always try to create the sounds yourself; that's the fun part of sound design...

Just to enforce the good uncles words, lots O' layers. Each of those parts he talked about might contain 3-4 sounds, you could be talking 12+ sounds to make that sequence. Don't think of the whole think of the parts.

Just search it on google. These sounds are usually in wav format. So just type in the keywords, "free wav files" and off you go.

Two things to keep in mind on such searches. First most "sound FX" you can find (other than the big name SFX providers) are junk. Badly recorded, compressed to hel and gone, "normalized" and just sound BAD. They will stand out in a mix no mater what you do to them as an added SOUND EFFECT. That's fine if your doing a comedy where the silliness of the SFX is part of the point but will kill that little drama and take you audience right out of the action in your action epic. So listen critically.

Second don't pay too much attention to the name except if the name implies a sequence just say no. So for instance OLD CAR could mean anything and tells you nothing about what is actually in the file. So it might work, have to listen to know. MACHETE FLYING THROUGH THE AIR AND STICKING IN A TREE, though it sounds like just what you might want is an almost certain skip. Why? Because it is a sequence that probably has no relation to the timing you need. Also it is most certainly created not recorded and pretty much no decent sound editor/ designer would put a sequence like that out in the world because of the general uselessness of such a thing so this was probably put together for some consumer "isn't it cool" SFX CD and those are a definite pass.

I don't know if they're still out there, but look for "Hollywood Edge" library of sound fx. We use them extensively. Tons of professional quality sounds, with countless variations. If they're still not sold, you might look for them on E-bay.

And remember: you get what you pay for. "Free" has a price, usually found in the quality or lack thereof.

Hollywood Edge is still going strong and has a LOT of disks. Sound Ideas is another, Sonic Boom, Digieffects are all very good.

On the cheaper quality side are all the BBC series disks, stepping down a bit is the CBS disks if you can find them. Valentino, Network FX, Electra, Brainbrige, etc. are all a bit dodgy. A lot of OLD analog recordings that in some cases have been transferred from disk complete with pops and scratches. All of them have some useful stuff but the later is a needle in a haystack.

Digital Juice sells some very cheap and LARGE collections. But they tend to the prosumer/ late night low budget ad kind of stuff. The up side is that with SO much stuff it's still a bargain especially if you need some FX with a little cheese.
