Where to find directors for possible hire

I'm in pre production for a SAG low budget short. This will be my first as a producer and was wondering what is a good way to find and contact up and coming directors for interviews. I'm not a well know producer so I understand I wont find Steven Spielberg. But I am willing to pay for a very talented union lesser known director. Thanks for any advice.

Film festivals would be a good start. Filmmakers are often present, and you can seek out those whose work you like.

Going signatory with the DGA involves a lot of financial commitment because you get a package deal, not just a director. You're aware of that, right?

Just because you're going union (SAG) with the actors doesn't mean your other departments (i.e. director) need to be union as well.

Thanks for all the feedback. Talked to a couple good directors, good talent out there. I think what is going to be key, is finding someone who shares the same (or close as can be) ideas and vision as me. This project is a Action/drama. It has a little military flare to it, so in my mine someone like a Tony Scott is what I'm after.

Anyone know a good affordable director like this?

Hey Jet Monkey,

I've never been to this forum before, but I saw your missive. Curious, did you find a few directors to interview? I'm a commercial director looking to do a short film. I'd like to chat and see if maybe we can collaborate. My personal email is abiicon@hotmail.com

Cheers,

I second the DGA site, it's not like all the best directors are DGA but all DGA directors have earned their spot in the DGA in one way or another and that means something.

This is easy.

Solicit an experienced DP looking to move into the director's chair. Craig's list and a great reel are your friends here.

Where is the film going to be shot? what's the genre is it? How long is it scheduled to shoot for. who's the DP? With more info, im sure you can find a director here on this site. There's some very talented people here.
