Where should I buy a Marantz PMD661 online? (Good service etc)

I've decided on the Marantz but not sure where I should buy it. I found some places but I want to give my money to a reputable audio specialist. Any suggestions? Sorry if it's a dumb question. I tried searching with no luck.

What country are you in?

It's no use suggesting a UK dealer if you are in the USA or Australia - or vice versa.

I would probably buy from Canford Audio myself.

I'm in Australia but the AU$ is so strong at the moment it's much cheaper to buy from overseas. Is there any reason for me not to buy from an overseas dealer online? I guess it would be good for repairs to go with a local bricks and mortar store?

In Australia there is John Barry Group (www.johnbarry.com.au). If you want to buy overseas and not deal with a language barrier, there are numerous dealers in the U.S., and I would imagine in the UK. If you want to make sure you get the customer service you are looking for, then I would start by e-mailing a couple of dealers to get pricing, and see how that goes. Start asking questions about the product to see who is knowledgable and who isn't, and from there you can hopefully make an informed decision on who you want to buy from. Having been in the "sales guy" shoes before, I can tell you it's great to build a relationship with an audio shop you are comfortable with. Even if you don't spend a ton of money at a place, keeping your purchases loyal to a place will get you better deals in the long run. It's ok to get quotes from several shops and go back to the place you like if someone else has a lower price on an item. Usually, they'll at least match it...at least I used to.

Is it really cheaper, including shipping and import taxes than to buy locally?

The reason things are so expensive in Australia is because of all the import duties, etc.

Also, the official dealer declares products to customs so that no one else can legally import.

So you may get stuffed for duty when you bring it in to Oz and will have no guarantee at all other than from the on-line shop you bought it from.

I've just listed one on Ebay UK for £350 (from new prices are about £420-£470) but can change the settings to allow for international deliveries if you were interested? It's a used one in perfect working order with minor scratches.

Any questions let me know.

Sorry - how can a first poster spamming his own stuff be a "reputable dealer" ? :thumbdown

Thanks everyone for feedback. It's given me food for thought.

I've bought a bunch of stuff from overseas and never been charged for duty/GST etc. But I would much rather buy from a local dealer so I will consider that. Maybe the online prices in Australia I found for the Marantz were outdated? At about AU$1000 it was much more than overseas prices. I'll call John Barry and see what the current price is.

Thanks again.

Thanks philosopher292 but if I was buying secondhand I would only buy locally. Unless that unit is still under warranty £350 seems a bit expensive too. For £70 more I could get it brand new with a warranty according to your own information.
