Where do you keep your stuff?

I've recently run into a problem. I live in a small apartment and I'm running out of room to keep all my filmmaking stuff and still have room to, you know, live in my apartment. How do you guys keep all your stuff organized and not have it take over most of the apartment?

Organized is the key word. Everything that can go on a shelf or in a drawer does to make room for production equipment. My room is packed with that. When I don't clean up for a week the floor can't be seen; when I do clean up and organize correctly, I have plenty of room to stretch. Anything to increase use of vertical space is a good asset. But I think your main problem is that you want room to live in your apartment. If it comes down to a choice, lights might have to take priority. Although most of those box and fold up pretty well.

I think your main problem is that you want room to live in your apartment.

I also try to keep stuff organized (key word being try) but with everything being used often (shoots, practice, maintenance, etc) it makes it difficult. I wouldn't mind just converting the living room to a studio/equip locker, but the Mrs. might have a small problem with it. I also have an oddly designed apt that makes it awkward just to designate a corner or wall for video stuff without putting our couch in the kitchen.

So, would getting a storage unit be cheap, practical, or safe enough? I've also heard of people renting cheap studio apartments and using them as cheaper offices.

I use tool chests like the ones you see in Home Depot with the diamond plated fronts... they look very cool and funky in my modern modern loft (exposed brick and all that) but also the ability to lock them and the telescoping shelves make it easy to organize and access your stuff, all well looking like a million bucks!

I have a set of shelves where I keep my camera bag, mic and all my smaller accessories, then a few drawers for cables, chargers, batteries (if they're not in the case), etc... Then against a wall i have my tripod case, boom case, shoulder rig and light stands in a corner. Still enough free space for my edit desk and room for a green screen set up or interview set up. In my garage I got 2 bicycle hooks that are about a foot long that hang off the wall and I keep my jib on that. If all that fails, then just dedicate a corner of the place for stuff. Lean stands against the wall... But there's always a place to (safely) put your camera down.

The life of an artist ain't easy...give into the dark side and relinquish all your space to your equipment.

I just try to have a case for everything, and I stack. The more equipment you have that is loose, the worse it'll get. Plus having cases for everything aids in transport.

I still don't have my own light kit or grip equipment, and I can see some of this stuff being a touch troublesome to find cases and such for...but it'll have to be done

A place for everything, and everything in it's place....Corners, and high places(even if you have to build shelves or install hooks and such) are your friends.

If your equipment trully begins to overun your living space though, only store the most used equipment in your living quarters, and rent a storage space for the rest.

I just had the same problem, I have a 400 foot square apt and had to figure out what to do. buy some risers for your bed about 20 bucks for the set at your local mattress store and buy under the bed storaage units. My portable green screen, glidecam, and glidetrack, and tripod fit perfectly!
