Where do docs go?

Hi everyone,

I'm a documentary filmmaker in Chicago and part of a somewhat monthly meet-up group for area documentarians, where we exchange tips and network.

At our next meeting, we're going to talk about what people do with their documentaries when they are done. For instance, selling them to television, film festivals, self-distribution, etc...

Can anyone tell me some possible things to do with a documentary film when it's finished, with some tips on how to get it out there?

Thanks!

It depends on the documentary.
Many I make, I have no idea I am doing it at the time. These apontaneous labors of love are the best because no story is having to try to be told. The story simply gets followed. By this, one would not know what it is he has until it's all said and done so an ability and open mindedness in pitching stages down the road are required.
From non-scripted tv series fodder to webisode coolness, it revolves around the flavor and intent of the piece.
