Where can you get guns for your movie?

How does someone on a budget film a scene involving a firearm? I just have once scene of a character pulling a small gun like a PPK or some compact 9mm on someone. I certainly don't want to use real guns for this, is there a place where you can buy replica firearms? Do indie films typically buy toy guns like airsoft and paint the orange cap?

The least expensive way is to get a paintball gun and modify it, but make sure you get the right ones so they don't look off at all. Best to buy in person so you can see what you're getting, if you're lucky enough to live somewhere that has the proper store selection. Just be very careful once you have one, it's potentially illegal to carry and can get you killed if you take it in public.

If you are not going to show it in close up, or need it to work, plastic toy guns like the Air Softs would be fine. I have a friend of mine who works as an armorer and SFX guy and he has a collection of cheap plastic water pistols he picked up in dollar stores, then painted black. They look very realistic on the screen.

I used a real pistol in a shoot once, but I removed the firing pin.
