where can you find reliable critique?

hi, im wondering where i could go for more critique from people who know screenwriting.

when i say know screenwriting i mean they have read and practice the principles from books like "STORY." not someone who just knows what a 3 act structure is and has written some student films.

there is one guy i trust for feedback, but im just fishing for a way to get more from reliable sources.

You ask people to read the first ten pages. You'll then gravitate toward those who know what they're talking about.

Randall, have you used Scott the reader? looks interesting. i assume this is what you're talking about.

Yes, I had Scott read and give feedback on several feature specs and a few shorts (he will read shorts cheaper, maybe $25 if I recall). He gives really nice detailed notes on a feature-- four pages single spaced, positive and negative. No false praise like friends might give you just to stay friends and not hurt your feelings. And Scott allegedly has read about 10,000 scripts. Compare his $60 notes to an author of a screenwriting book I once contacted who wanted $1000 for a one page summary (the one page summary would be from me about my story/script, to which she would give feedback); or another screenwriting book author who wants $250/hr for a phone consult on a story idea. $60 is pretty affordable for what you get from Scott, imho.

Someone who's read a lot of scripts, has no personal investment in trying to change your script to his or tastes, and you can see what sort of feedback they've given on other scripts.

You want unabashed honesty, and some "musings" or "passive thoughts".

You don't want someone who thinks their ideas are better than yours, nor someone who's in the running for your position.

Scott The Reader sounds like a nice place to start.

Simplyscripts.com is an on-line writers group (and a very big one, I might add). You can load your script to the site (free) and people will usually read it if you read some of theirs.
