Where can I get 800w (or 1k or 650w) dimmers from in the UK

Proper lighting dimmers, with some filtering are available - this one is an example http://www.thomann.de/gb/botex_ct_110.htm

The motor types are quiet similar to dedicated lighting designs, and to a degree the motor types often have a bit more beefiness to them to cope with the back emf from the motor, which is absent in a filament load.

Be VERY careful with the imported ones - most will fail the UK safety testing for 230V 50Hz mains - some have no ground connection at all = look for those 2 pin brown plugs. If they are on the unit, then be very concerned that any CE label is not the European safety testing one, but China Export, which means nothing at all, and is just a meaningless label. Virtually all lighting sold in the UK is a Class I product and needs a mains ground(earth), using one of the cheap Chinese ones will remove this. If you go somewhere and they insist on testing it, expect a fail! 120V equipment has a nice smell when used on 230V mains!

THanks for that, not sure what you meant by motorised ones, I am just looking for a simple one. What do you mean by filtering? The one you link to is fairly inexpensive so sounds like a good bet.
