im sorry to sound like such a jerk/noob, but im teaching myself fcp and ive been reading all the sticky posts and dont know where to change these settings everyones talking about.

i am trying to capture/edit in 24p and stretch mode, so where do i go to change these settings?
so far i have been told to click the timeline, go to sequence, click the anamorphic 16:9 box. and do i change it to 23.98 or 24 for the editing time base? then do i also click advanced under quicktime video settings and change the scan mode to progressive and aspect ratio to 16:9, or do i leave that how it was?

also

ive been told to click final cut - then audio/video settings and change settings here. do i change it to 23.98 and click the anamorphic 16:9 box under sequence preset, capture preset AND control preset? or just one of these, or none?

what i dont understand is am i supose to change the settings in all 4 of these different settings areas, or just 1 or 2 of them? do i need to click anything else in any of these? i also read your supose to remove the 2:3:3:2 pulldown when using 24p. what is that and where do i go to remove this?

im sorry for sounding like an idiot but i feel like everyone must go in to somewhere and makke quick setting changes before they edit, i just dont know where that is. if anyone has free time you could just film your computer opening fcp and changing settings then capture and exporting in 24p and stretch mode and im sure youd help out a ton of people with that 2 minute video and it would be a great sticky.

If your teaching yourself FCP, you might want to invest in some of the Apple Pro Training Series books. They could be a valuable tool for you. Just google them or search for them on any major online retailer.

Also, with a lot of the specific questions you've raised, you might want to look into Noah's DVDs. He goes over 24p related workflows in them. They too might be a handy reference, especially if you'll be using footage from a DVX100.

As for your questions, the 23.98 issue depends on what you shot with. If you shot 29.97 or 24p then you should edit at 29.97. If you shot 24pA (Advanced), then you should edit at 23.98. Additionally, if you shot at 24pA, you should turn on the "Remove Advanced Pulldown" checkmark for the capture preset you're using (however, there is a pre-made one already in FCP so you can just select that, the DV NTSC 48kHz Advanced Pulldown capture preset).

As for the Anamorphic/Squeeze issue. If you're shooting SD squeeze, you're shooting a 4x3 image. That's the way it goes. So all you're doing to make it 16x9 is telling FCP that you've shot squeeze mode so can you change my frame size to 853 wide so the aspect ratio looks correct. So what I'm getting at is that the squeeze/anarmophic setting is just that, a setting. In the Browser in FCP, if you scroll horizontally, there will be a column that says Anarmophic. If you click in the column spaces you'll either turn on (add a checkmark) or turn off (remove a checkmark) the setting. That's it. This applies to both clips and to sequences. You can adjust your Capture Preset and Sequence Preset to turn these on automatically for you (Can be handy to do so if you'll be using a lot of clips and/or sequnces). But if you forget, or need to change it after the fact, not the end of the world.

Now FCP, at least in some of my experiences, can be a little troublesome to refresh this setting. So I would recommend digitizing a sample clip, aligning all your settings to suit your project, and then go about doing it. Again, entirely fixable later on, but just sometimes might require re-cutting in a shot here or there, or having to copy and paste to a new timeline, etc. Or, like Noah mentioned, check out the Easy Setups. If one of those applies to your needs, then it will align everything for you quite nicely and in one step.

cheers.

thanks for the reply, just where are these easy setups for me to look at?
and agian, my problem is i dont know where im supose to be going to changing these setups, where do i go to select the DV NTSC 48kHz Advanced Pulldown capture preset? i dont see it when i go to sequence, then settings. so am i changing my settings in the wrong place?

(1) The menu bar at the top of your screen, while having FCP as the active application, on the far left it will say "Final Cut Pro". If you click on and expand that menu, one of the options under there is Easy Setup. Open that up and you'll find a list of a variety of different pre-made configurations for you. More times then not if FCP is being finicky with me, I go to the Easy Setups and the universe corrects itself (especially when dealing with DVCProHD stuff).

(2) Same "Final Cut Pro" menu, click on the "Audio/Video Settings" option. This will open up a dialog window. There you will see the tabs "Summary", "Sequence Presets", "Capture Presets", "Device Control Presets", and "A/V Devices." So your "Sequence Presets" and "Capture Presets" are best selected/manipulated/etc here. However, I really wouldn't recommend fidling with any of those unless you're VERY confident to what you're doing. I'd stick to the easy setups for now and look into adjusting these kinds of things later (and probably with one of the Apple Pro Training Series books in hand).

cheers.
