Where all da white women at?!

Hey all - I heard my name and thought I'd pop in to say how-dee!

Was hoping to see this months contest entries, but alas, hardly any mention of it.

Wha hoppen?!

Take a break from this joint, and I barely recognize anyone.

For the two people who actually missed me while I've been gone, Just letting you know I have temporarily set down the DVX for a Panaflex Gold II 35mm.

Got a grant from Panavision and donations from several generous industry types, and we're shooting our first "film". So now I can truly say I am a FILMmaker for those of you who rage THAT debate around here.

Needless to say, with a fulltime day job, and pre-production hell, DVXUser has taken a backseat in my otherwise partially clear schedule.

We have some great named indie talent attached to our project, and the short will hopefully be seen at a film festival near you in the future.

We go in to actual production this weekend. So you may all resume forgetting who I am.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled posting.

Peace!

(OH! and P.S. - I snaked that wide angle lens from PK! All the way from Thailand, and it STILL works! Thanks again PK! Now i just need to find my way back to the digital world and make another short)

So wheres da white women? Wait, panavision gave you a grant but yet you're using a Arri? Hmm, suckas! Tony, if you eva need an asian thug in your movie holla! Good Luck bro.

Actually it's a Panaflex Gold II

The New Filmmaker Program has four 16mm and two 35mm cameras which have been set aside from the rental pool and are permanently attached to the program. These cameras are rotated from production to production, with time allotted for camera service and maintenance between shows.

We did some tests on an old Arri about a month back. Had it telecine'd. Shot side by side with the DVX. And i gotta tell ya...well, I wont tell ya...I'll post the footage in the near future, after time stands still.

your check bounced!
You actually GOT a check?!

LOL :)

I was just about to start a new thread, writing about your kindness and generosity in helping support my cause*, but then I received your check. Unfortunately a check written on a Denny's napkin is worthless everywhere except at fine Denny's restaurants. I don't know which should have been my first clue. The fact that your avatar is a mug shot or that you were willing to pay 500% more than retail.

All I can do now is hope, someday, you become a famous filmmaker (outside of DVXuser) and this Denny's napkin I.O.U. will be worth something on eBay.

 Enjoy the lens antomic and thanks again for helping support my cause*.

PK

* 'Cause' herein refers to 1) sleeping till noon, 2) buying pretty things for my girlfriends, and 3) Internet access.

I'm glad to hear all is well, antomic! I was wondering what happened to you.

..hey thats great to hear man! good luck with the film. let us know when its done and ill be sure to check it out. ;)

Good luck antomic, and remember - don't try to white balance the Panavision! That GII is dead sexy and it'll do a great job for you.

Hey everybody! Just got a butt-load of 35mm stock today - healthy donation - some short ends too - the labels on the cans have some pretty cool titles on them. how cool! we're shooting with left overs that were slated for the big boys! NICE!

antomic - congratulations on post #666. Rich Lee made a scary zombie animation when he hit 666. Your post was slightly less entertaining as his. Seriously, good luck this weekend. Don't forget us when you make it big. I mean, BIGGER. :)

PK

thanks phil! now if you can teach me how to edit high def in FCP, we're all set! haha

they're doing a 2k Spirit transfer 4:4:4 - any tips?

Antomic - It's 2:30am. Get some sleep buddy! I know it's like the night before Christmas, but try to sleep.

sent you a pm dude! But I'll paste in here too in case other people ever want to consider 4:4:4.

You can most certainly do all your off-line editing in FCPHD with footage you've got. Then have a house online it once you're happy editing it. Not sure what your guys' budget is. But the online process is f'in expensive. I believe $150-1000 hour. The only places capable of doing it "right" I know of doing it at an "affordable" cost are Modern Video(Right there on Flower) or Photo-Kem. If I was doing a movie, those are the only places I would send my editing.

wow... 4:4:4?? Well... there's only one option you can really take and that I recommend to juice that out if you want to do it yourselves. It's Kona 2.
http://www.aja.com/products_kona.html

I contacted AJA back in September. At the time, as for the recommended RAID configuration, AJA recommends:
__________________________
the ATTO UL3D-66, or the UL4D, with the latest firmware update, with at least 2 Seagate Cheetah u320 SCSI drives. The Medea RTR/RTS/RTRX, Apple XServe XRAID and the Storcase RAID model S20G120 are the ATA-based SCSI RAID's that are qualified.

You can also use a 4-drive ATA RAID inside the G4 using the motherboard ATA controllers, however the new G5 only allows 2 internal drives so you may need an external RAID system..or 2 serial ATA drives within the G5 and then put the OS on a PCI Controller Card, such as the Sonnet TEMPO HD 40. At this time , as I mentioned, we do not officially support the use of FireWire drives. Also, you can use the Io with a 17" powerbook and now capture 10bit uncompressed with the proper setup and configuration.
________________________

If you decide to off-line it yourselves and not hassle about the card/raid system, then you really should look into getting Lumiere HD. It's fairly inexpensive.
http://www.lumierehd.com/lumiere_hd.php

Also, FCP Guru Graem Nattress has recently joined the DVXUser.com ranks. You should send him a message. He's got experience with HD and he uses the DeckLink card. Maybe might be able to reommend a setup to you. (Might even be cheaper than the Kona2 route) I believe it can juice out 4:4:4 as well. His website:
http://www.nattress.com/index.htm
His HD review with Decklinnk
http://www.lafcpug.org/reviews/review_decklink.html

The only thing that sucks with FCP 4.5 right now is that we can't view HDV output from a camera such as the Sony FX-1. Only DV. When FCP 5 releases next month though, we'll be ab able to edit HDV without the need of extra knickknacks.

Hey, that's awesome! Congrats! Free handouts, SWEET!

BTW, did you do the Madagascar poster? It looks REALLY good! The wrap party is on Saturday, and I actually get to go (unlike the Shrek 2 one.)
