when using phantom power from camera...how much power am i using from the battery..is it a significant amount?

just curious how much i am draining..cuz maybe i should use a AA battery instead.

Mic power draw is minimal. An AT4053a, for example, draws 3.2 milli-amps. An AT835 draws 2 milli-amps from phantom power, or 0.4 mA from a battery. A single AA battery will last for about 1200 hours!

Something to factor in is that many (most?) electret condenser mic's actually perform better from phantom power than they do from AA power. The AT-835, for example, has a dynamic range of 91dB from the AA battery, but 106dB from phantom power! For convenience and better performance (and lower cost -- no need to buy AA's) I always run my 835 from phantom power.

cool i ordered the AT 897 from B&H ..i cant wait to utilize it!
i will use phantom power from my DVX.

i couldnt fork over the extra 250 bucks for the 4073a...maybe next year i'll get it.

OK I just got my DVX from Rush at EVS. I have an AT825. I put in the battery into the mic and plugged the AT 825 into the XLR inputs. I turned on the Power to Channel 1 and Channel 2. All audio was recorded OK. Will the Phanom power over ride the AA battery power or should I remove the battery from the AT 825when using it plugged into the DVX100a?

Ummm, I'm not sure, but I never have my battery in. Why would you leave it in if you want to run phantom?

It had a battery so i put it in, not really thinking about phantom power at the time. I'm going to remove it now though.

I usually leave the AA in so I can conserve camera battery power, but the usage is prolly negligible.
