When to use Widescreen?

My main focus as of now is creating music video projects. I have some that I use a Matte widescreen and others that I do not. Is it the generally opinion that when using the black bars on top and bottom of a video that it gives it more of a "movie" like feel?

Opinions are welcome on this. Also for music videos are static shots better than handheld or vice versa or a mixture of both?

Thank you

Depends what you mean by 'widescreen.' If you're shooting HD you're automatically shooting 16:9 which is what some folks would call widescreen. From there you can further matte off the image to approximate a 2.35 aspect ratio which is what still more people would call widescreen. As for when it's appropriate, that is a complete matter of personal taste.

This is exactly what I meant. I usually do 2.35 which gives it the black bars on top and bottom which I think works for some projects and not others. Since I never went to school for this and have basically picked this up as a talent I wanted to know from a "technically" person what is the exact reason that this is used for, or is it al artistic?

I know when creating Music Videos you are very free to do a lot of things and be very creative as their is not one set rule. I just really wanted to ask the community or people alike that create music videos what is the main rule for doing this.

Thanks
