When to Kickstart or IndieGoGo?

Hey Folks,

I'm sure most of you are familiar with crowdfunding by now. If not, it's basically a means to raise money for your film by exchanging cool perks for donations. The two prominent sites that I know of which facilitate this are Kickstarter and IndieGoGo.

Here's my question: Do you think it's more effective to raise money for production (before actually filming) or for post-production (after you have footage and are editing)?

My hunch is a campaign will be more successful for completion funds, since you have footage to show off and the film itself is more likely to be completed.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!!!

If you are a relative unknown, you are far, far, far, far, far more likely to be able to successfully raise completion funds than you are to raise production funds.

Thanks, Barry. And as you know, I am unknown! LOL So your point definitely applies to me.

And to add to this conversation, I'm also wondering how many genuine strangers to the project really end up contributing to projects on these sites. It seems like it really comes down to good old friends and family....

More thoughts, please....
