Just thought this would be an interesting topic of discussion.
I was watching a movie, some low-budget horror flick with Britney Murphy, and as I was watching the previews I realized that BECAUSE the previews for the movies I was seeing all had name "talent" in them I had little desire to see them. I saw the previews and felt that because they had name talent the movie probably isn't that good.
Now certainly we've always assumed people thought differently. We thought, "If they see that some television or b-movie star is in the movie, they'll be more apt to give it a look." But what I've found over the last, say, five years has been that people seem to be responding to whether or not the movie is in the collective consciousness WITHOUT any name talent behind it. If I've heard of a movie (Ink or Paranormal Activity, for instance, or maybe a show like The Guild or a foreign flick like Waltz with Bashir) that has no stars or name talent actors attached to it and I still know about it, the thought process is "Well, it must be good then," simply because I've heard of it.
So leaving distributors out of the equation for a minute as I personally feel we're about 10 years off from all Indie filmmakers creating their own group of distribution companies or film-specific distribution companies becoming the norm, if you had 20K in your budget to hire a known actor or you could alternatively use that 20K on a mass marketing campaign, knowing the current climate, which would you be more apt to spend that 20K on?
