When not using your tripod...

When not using your tripod, do you tend to use some other hardware to steady the shot? I recently purchased a Glidecam 4000 w/ arm brace, and I already have pretty decent results after balancing it. In situations where I am not using a tripod (walking around, chasing after my kids, etc.), I think I should be using the Glidecam almost always, since it's made for that type of thing. So my question is, in situations that do not require a tripod, do other glidecam/streadicam owners tend to grab their stabilizers straight away? Or do you only use them for shots that you have planned out beforehand, or which require smooth motion?

What about shots that do not require much forward motion, but require more 'fluidity' than that offered by a tripod (for example, a shot which requires a 'hand held' or 'documentary' type feel, but without unnecessary and distracting shaking/bumpiness)?

Thanks for any insight.

BTW, I purchased my Glidecam from http://www.4videoequipment.com (I actually went to their warehouse and met them). Highly recommended.

Re: When not using your tripod...

Hand held stabilizers are great for specific shots.

For how long can you shoot with your Glidecam before holding it in two hands and using it as a stick. I think it is useless in HardCore ducumentaries, When you realy do not know what is going to happen next and for how long.

Imegine chasing your kids and then one of them stops to tell you a long story.

Yafa.

When I don't have a tripod present I will use other stuff to prop the camera on to get the shot I need. I can be seen hugging a tree or a pole for stability to get a shot depending on where I am. A lot of time I may just lean up against a wall in such a way to stabilize the shot.

You should look into either getting or making a DIY Steady Bag.

You can get one of the compact carbon fiber Gitzo tripods and use it like a DV Rig type device.   The just flip up one leg and use it over your shoulder and use the other 2 legs for grips.   And in a few seconds you and extend the legs and have a tripod shot if you wish.

Also, you can fully extend the legs and use it as a monopod because it is so thin and light.
