basically like the title says, I know its probably gonna be simple but I cant f** figure it out and its bothering the hell outta me!! lol

can someone explain what the setting is or what the heck i'm doing wrong that, for example: I am looking at a 52 second clip in after effects and when I ram preview it will only ram preview 15 seconds and thats it. It wont ram preview the entire clip..WHY??

anyways, I have a quad core 8 gig ram, xp64 and cs4.

any help would be appreciated..

You need more ram. Depending on the size of your composition, large frame sizes can eat up ram quick. You can try turning down the resolution or previewing your sequence skipping x number of frames.

You can also "make movie" and pick a format that you know will playback in real time on your system.

Also double check to make sure your work area is set to longer than 15 seconds. If your comp was only 15 seconds before you imported your clip then your work area is only 15 seconds and you'll need to drag out your work area or change the time in your comp settings.

I have 8gb of memory and RAM preview, depending on what kind of HD project, only makes about a 20-25 second preview as well

15 secs seems short even if you're working with HD. Unless you have +20 layers of effects plus motion blur enabled. I would suggest what Brinks said but yeah... it also depends on how much memory you have.

In AE CS4 - There is a setting in preferences called Memory and Multiprocessing. In addition to being able to specify how much of your RAM is used in what way, there is also a slider that looks something like this...

Longer RAM Preview <--------------|-------------> Faster Rendering

Hopefully this helps - it did for me. Of course more RAM is always a good thing.

Would the purge function perhaps help here? I'm not sure, but I remember watching an AE tutorial once where the project was processor intensive and by using "purge all" the memory was cleared and the rendering worked much better. It's in AE CS3, I don't know about CS4.
