When hiring a first Assistant Director....

...what are some of the things to look for?

What sort of questions would you ask them to see whether they were up to the task?

I would look for someone to show -

1. Good knowledge of the role of 1st AD and how much work the role involves
2. A good fit with the director, personality wise, and has affinity with the material
3. Leadership skills, someone who comes across as having natural authority on set
4. Great communication skills
5. Conflict resolution skills/cool head under pressure
6. Perhaps a good track record as a 1st AD on other projects
7. Someone who knows how to stay on schedule (knowing when to apply pressure and when to ease off).
