when HD still aint high-rez enough...

I thought I actually posted about this question over a year ago, but couldn't find that thread... anyhow:

My screen grabs of HVX footage are too grainy for a job that needs still-camera-quality images. (have Raylight Ultra set to max quality, have the Vegas preview window set to Full>Best quality, etc)

I'm guessing that even though HVX footage is high-definition, it's still not the quality resolution of any given regular old digital still camera?

?

no its not.

No HD camera is high res enough to simulate a digital still camera.

The RED will give you sufficent resolution, but to pull stills from it you need to shoot with a high shutterspeed which is not what you neccesarily want out of your motion images. my advice, shoot the video on your HVX, and bring a still camera along..

No HD camera is the resolution of a decent still camera. A RED one comes closest. The HVX has one of the lowest resolutions of any HD camcorder.

Digital still camera = about 18 million pixels.

HD video = about 2 million pixels.

So, no -- no HD camcorder is going to be in the same zip code, much less the same neighborhood, of a proper digital still camera, when it comes to making stills.

"any given regular old digital still camera" is far from 18 Mpix. My 10-year old Olympus is 2Mpix, my 4-year old Canon is 3.1Mpix. My 2-year old D40 is, if I am not mistaken, "only" 8Mpix.

I think we're missing the key phrase -- 'My screen grabs..."

I assume by the term "screen grabs" you mean using the PrntScrn function. These kinds of screen grabs will NEVER come close to any kind of digital still. Vegas has a button for saving a still from the footage. I'm not on my editing machine so I can't direct you to it, but find it.

Thanks for the responses... I figured as much.

BTW, yeah, I used the Vegas "screen grab" method. (floppy icon above preview window IIR)

I figured you weren't that dumb, but I had to ask. :)

HA HA! No. In fact, I pretty much figured the answer, but was in denial that I screwed up so bad and was hoping there was something I was somehow missing that would save my butt! :(

Ah, those stressed, time-pressured shoots where you miss doing something you can never get back! And all it would have taken was a cheap and cheesy little still cam.
