When did Hollywood become political?

Just a little reminder for everyone to stay civil and avoid any partisan comments.:costumed-smiley-047 <----notice the Mr T. icon.

come back to reality for a second. like it or not, celebrities have power. no, no wait a second! think about it. what kind of power does a celebrity wield within our social fabric? hmmm, what kind of influence do they have? are you seeing it yet? michael j. fox can't cure parkinson's disease. but he can use his celebrity to increase funding for research. angelina jolie can't stop the crisis in darfur, but she can put it in the headlines by speaking about it. are you seeing how they can use their power politically? are you following? or just thinking up more hyperbole to reply with?
perfect!:love4:

i don't understand... you don't like when celebrities change there politics to follow the prevailing wind, but when they go against public opinion, they're screw-ups? huh?

Oh, sorry for the misinterp. I just got the giggles from the look on his face. Can't say yea or nay, but it looked like he wet his finger, tested the wind, and got it wrong anyway.

Didn't see whole lot of commitment there (like Martin Sheen has). Really looked like a whoopsie.

Could be wrong.

When it comes to Hollywood and actors, I always remember that actors need work, ratings are everything, and the necessity to be in the public eye.

Unfortunately, actors like Michael J Fox bringing awareness to Parkinson’s' are in a very small minority. And he isn't even particularly relative to the thread, since the light he would shed would be for something that's not political. But to say don't have power, I think they do. The power to influence if nothing else. Knowing that, I always keep in mind these are people whose job it is to pretend. That's what they do, they pretend for a living. So until I see all the George Clooney’s, Barbara Streisands, Cameron Diaz's and such ilk, with some education or study amongst their resumes in areas that would make them an authority on political situations, I treat their views as they should be treated: People living in a pampered life of non-reality, doing their jobs of creating a medium of non reality.

(why did I specifically omit actors whose views don't lean to the far left? I can't think of any who's views lean to the right, not recently, and certainly not any that get any airtime for it.)

I don't care much about what any of those people say, but it is definitely amusing to see how their views can influence so many.

I realize not all of Hollywood is vocal for or against anything, and the one’s that the loudest are the most famous. It’s hard for anyone who it treated like a demigod not to let it go to their head and consider themselves with a bloated sense of self worth. Hell, that’s human nature.

So just consider the source.

But, it is getting more prevalent, no doubt about that.

EDIT: THie may have come out a little partisan, but I wan't attacking anyone's view, just citing examples.

now if someone came up to you with a microphone and asked what do you think about in ? i'm not going to comment on the grounds that my job is a pretender so mums the word............. but governor the people want to know................and polititions aren't pretending?:Drogar-Evil(DBG):

That's a rather miopic way of looking at it, and falls far short of not only my point, but of reality. The fact is, "leftist" views get far more airtime than "right" in the meida as a whole. Period.

And why not blame the media? They are the one's producing the material, and rehashing it. From what you are saying, it's almost as if you don't believe different media sources have their own ideologies they support, and it's us senseless cows that simply ask for it. Well, that's not the case. THe media puts forth what it wants, in such a way at to both push their own agenda, and keep ratings. Can anyone tell me that Fox News is NOT conservative biased and that CNN is not liberal biased? C'mon . .

And if someone came up to me with a microphone, sure Id'e give my option, and again you miss the point. Would my opinion affect as many people as Tom Cruise or Opra? Hell no, it wouldn't. Would my words be taken as seriously by the masses? No. Would they even be SEEN as much by the masses. No.

And pretending is exactly what actors do. If it makes people more "comfotable" to have it put "establish and hold the suspended-belief exprerince" Call it that then. It's still ACTING.

EDIT: And speaking of "your job", don't you "get into" charater? What, if not pretending, is that? Also speaking of "your job", are you one of the uber famous celebs that go out and talk politics that millions listen to? If not, you are'nt the kind of people I was talking about in the first place.

desperatecomfort you took the words right out of my mouth!!

Rapier, i was saying in jest and i wasn't aiming it at you. i have to modify, i tend to say things that look like i'm attacking but what i'm attacking is ourfool selves and especially me included. but i still stand by my words....MONEY, MEDIA, AND PEOPLE who buy. if nobody cares then it don't sell, then they (media) moves to the next story. PRETENDING is a job! then they got a life with their families. and they vote for things to apply to their way of life. no i don't want my sons and daughters to go to war for some other reason than what they are really saying. yes i will speak out to help my neighbors my country as i see fit. and if it's in the media, so be it.

Politics have always been a part of hollywood. In modern society politics are a part of everything.

Politics n.

A strife of interests masquerading as a contest of principles. The conduct of public affairs for private advantage.

It goes on at school, in the work place, on internet forums nudge nudge, wink wink. Unless you're living out in the middle of the woods by yourself in a hut, there are political agendas taking place.

Actors are paid liars and pretenders. Does that make their opinions less valid than a political analyst? Hell no. Is an actor's opinion more important than some poor person living in a trailer? Hell no. That person in the trailer, if they have enough passion, can rise up and cause a stir above any celebrity. Just because the popular sway is readily available doesn't mean much. If anything it might mean less.

Thanks Kimko. Awesome! I love Moose too. He played in "House" as that spooky vietnam zombie.

I deeply admire Bruce Lee. I would have probably had to bug Jabbar.
