I've been shooting with my DVX and editing for the last couple of years and getting pretty good results, when it occurred to me recently that I may not be doing everything technically as well as I could be.
I'm not talking about story, acting, or lighting, but rather overall video quality. I stated thinking about everyone's workflows, and what really works best from a technical point of view. I know we all have one of 4 or 5 different editing packages, but we're all trying to achieve the same thing-The Best Quality Product.
My Current Workflow.
Shoot-DVX 24P
Edit Final Cut Pro-On a Normal Timeline
Color Correct in Final Cut Pro
Export Quicktime Conversion Mpeg2-(8 Mbps/Motion Estimates Best/2 Pass VBR)
Burn DVD in DVD Studio Pro
Or if going to web-Export Uncompressed .mov and use Cleaner to compress into .mpeg/wmv/or mpeg4
I had always thought if I was going to DVD and not going to transfer to film, shoot 24P (few of us will ever be able to afford an Answer Print, and if we do it's probably someone else paying for it) But recently I've been hearing differently and now I'm wondering if I've been doing it wrong all this time.
I've been hearing quite a bit about Magic Bullet, DV Filmmaker, and Revision:Smooth Kit for staircase suppressing and overall 'Film-Like' reproduction. I've tried Magic Bullet (not being really interested in the LookSuite-only the Deartifacting) and honestly couldn't tell any difference.
And I've also been reading about 2-3 pulldown and 24P conversion stuff, and am wondering how I never considered any of this or somehow missed this step.
I've read great things about Sorenson Squeeze as well and was also wondering how others may or may not integrate that into their own process.
Does anyone know of any good Step-By-Step Workflows that I could read about, and what workflows seem to produce the Best Quality DVD's for you guys? Thanks and any info is much appreciated.
Frank
