Quick Q: I need to do an entire video in AE CS5, but I want to use Vegas to edit my raw footage down since it will be much easier. What codec would you recommend rendering out to in this case?
I use Cineform codec. Usually select mts clips I like, then convert those to cineform Neo.
If everything needs to go through AE, I would likely save project (in Vegas) with trimmed clips (checkbox in save/save as window.) Then import Cineform files. Same could be applied using Avid DNxHD codec.
Don't even render out. Use the Avid Legacy .aaf file type under "Save As". This generates an EDL that AE will read just fine. This way you only have to render from AE
I should clarify, if you're using straight cuts, the EDL will open with no problems. Do all your your titles and transitions in AE. Or, just render transitions and titles from Vegas, load them into your video, and then create the EDL
Installed DNxHD and couldn't be happier. Works like a charm in Vergas 10 Pro. Transfered a 720p test file to AE for CC and it looks amazing. Thanks for the advice.
