What's Wrong With Me?

Did you ever see a movie that everyone was raving about and you just absolutlely hated it.

It seems like everyone you know loves the film and you just don't get it.

For me that movie was Mystic River. I must be crazy, but I thought that movie was awful.

No need to beat me up over not liking it, I realize I am in the minority.

I'm curious though, if others have hated a movie that everyone else thought was a masterpiece.

Re: What's Wrong With Me?

well, then
something is wrong with me too.
I HATED Oscar winning Gladiator and Titanic.

I thought The Lord of Rings triology was very good and entertaining,
but I felt like they were a little bit overrated.

I liked Mystic River very much,
but I thought the ending was weak.

Just my cup of tea.

Re: What's Wrong With Me?

Viva la individual! I’m personally grateful we all love/hate different movies just like any other art form. People that dislike art that I like often point out angles or perspectives that I would have never imagined and that makes for great discussion and further insight, on most occasions, through someone else’s point of view.

It never changes my opinion but rather adds to the spectrum of my own. For instance that’s the first time I’ve heard anyone say they felt LOTR was overrated. It makes me want to revisit (and re-watch) from another angle, not that it would change my opinion but just to review from that perspective.

I think the only thing that could ever be ‘wrong’ would be that we always liked the same art and shared the same opinions on it. That would be a horrible, bland and non-creative existence imo. (although Hollywood would love it ;D)

Re: What's Wrong With Me?

There's a difference between not liking a film and not knowing what makes a film a good film. You can dislike a movie overall but you have to be able to explain why you didn't like it and things about it that were good...

For example, a Hilary Duff movie would not be one us filmmakers would consider a great movie. I know I wouldn't, it's not my style... I would personally say I dislike the film... as a filmmaker as well though, I can not deny the talent of the filmmakers of that film. The DOP is working with better equipment and more staff than I'm sure most of us have in our film careers, working with 35mm film, the producers are working with a huge budget and a huge staff/crew/cast... This is all hard to do as we all know dabbling with the artform ourselves.

We can respect what is good about a film and still dislike it. Disliking it is purely subjective... but if you ignore what is good about a film at the same time, you're not giving credit where credit is due. The reason another person might like a film is for all of those good qualities you're able to see, you just personally did not like the way that aspect was used.

I can tell a friend of mine I didn't like his movie, but I can also explain to him everything that went well and can respect the hell out of the guy for doing what he did.

It's quite possible for you to dislike a movie but still understand why others would like it... in fact, that's one of the most important thing to learn about any artform.

Re: What's Wrong With Me?

For me the BIGGEST example would be Kill Bill. I truely hated it, and considering I love Everything else QT has even had his pinkey in, I can't understand. Vol. 2 offended me far less, but i still wouldn't go so far to say it was a great film.

JUST LIKE CHRIS SAID: I don't need MORE ppl screaming at me for blasphamy, I get that enough already, just sharing. :)

Re: What's Wrong With Me?

i think anyone who liked the terrible attempt at a movie Garden State should be ashamed. everyone **** their pants when they saw it and was like "OMG ITZ SO GUD" and all the positive reviews made me pay to go see it. what a waste of money. i HATED HATED HATED lord of the rings. GOD those movies SUCKED. another big one is austin powers 3.

Re: What's Wrong With Me?

Everything I like is great, everything I dont like is bad. It's that simple. ;D

Re: What's Wrong With Me?

i think in film, there are always opinions. but, there are also some facts. some movies just are NOT good. theres no such thing as a good movie (all opinionated), but there are such things as bad movies.

Re: What's Wrong With Me?

it's about the experience.

I saw Battlefield Earth and most people would consider it awful. But the event was awesome. The entire audience was laughing. People were shouting at the screen. It was hilarious. A great time. But I could have seen it with no one around and thought it was just plain bad.

Re: What's Wrong With Me?

I just hate it when people say they hate certain movies but they don't have a reason for it. Or they don't have a reasonable reason to hate it. They just hated it b/c they thought it was stupid...**** like that pisses me off

Thank you,
I thought I was the only one who was disappointed with "Garden State".
They tried waaay tooo hard to make this movie artsy, it was almost cheesy. It was too self conscious.

Re: What's Wrong With Me?

i know! cliched "boys daddie put him on anti depressants but love conquers all" needless to say, some parts were hilarious. it wasn't good at being a dramatic film, just failed miserably at all the cliches it attempted. the knight part was hilarious. he should stick to comedy instead of cheesy drama.

Just in case that was inteneded toward us, the topic didnt ask for explanation, it asked if anyone hated a movie everyone else loved. Not to mention giving explanations just invites more arguing which goes agaisnt the whole topic.

Even "Destiny Turns On the Radio"? Really?

Re: What's Wrong With Me?

"Requiem for a Dream" and "Magnolia."

Collectively, almost six hours of potato-peeler-on-your-forearm misery.

Re: What's Wrong With Me?

Kill Bill

Why?

Pointlessly long shots cut to terrible music that would make Ray Liotta spin in his grave

Story = Null - I didn't care about the characters, or the bullshit copout ending

Split into 2 parts, double the money for those greedy bastards

That movie single handedly made me lose all my respect for Quentin

After seeing it I vomited, then went home and cried myself to sleep, perhaps it was because I was sick and angry at myself for wasting a good portion of my life sitting through those two pieces of failure.
