What's with the horrible noise from the headphone

I just found out that I'm not the only one that has this problem but is there anything that can be done about it besides an external mixer. I just got Senn HD 280 Pro's and even with no audio signal coming in the white noise is unbearable. It's not there on the audio out signal but it's impossible to monitor from the jack itself. What the F?

From what it looks like, the genious at Panasonic, took the DVX100 and when they put out the 100A, they included a gain/white noise on the headphone out so the signal would be hotter, and hearable with consumer headphones. It appears the 100 has a very clean output signal. I was also wondering if a good technician could or not come up with a mod that would bypass that ridiculous circuit, or if there was some settings that would turn it off...

This is a bit disturbing--do all of you with the DVX100a have noisy headphone circuits? Between the audio delay correction and the noisy circuit, it sounds like the DVX100a version is inferior for the basic function of audio monitoring. It might be better if you kept the monitor output level fairly low and used a good quality outboard headphone amplifier. This would keep you from having to jack up the gain on a noisy amplifier.

Barry, if I turn the volume all the way down, I still hear such white noise I couldn't live with it. The only way to have is slightly supressed is using poor quality headphones.

Crappy headphones is the only answer, huh? I can't believe Panny would do that. Looks like I have to get a field mixer now. There isn't some kind of attuneator that can fix the signal?

I still can't tell--is this universal with the DVX100a?  Another alternative is to take the line level audio feed from the RCA jacks into a small portable outboard amplifier and plug your headphones into the amplifier.

This little amp might work:

You'd also need an adapter cable that went from two male RCA plugs to a 1/8" mini plug.   This is probably a mono solution, so you'd need to make sure the terminating mini plugs for the input and the headphones were mono 1/8". You can always buy a cheap 1/8" stereo-1/8" mono adapter. I'm not 100% on the mono thing, but it makes sense.

yeah, it seems like a universal thing from other posts I've read around the net.  Ridiculous, huh?  I'm heading to radio shack after work to see what if I can do what you say, Barry.  I'm shooting in two weeks and have spent so much money in the last months that if I can get by without another $600 dollar expenditure I'm going to try it.

Yes, everyone please chill--this is the Audio forum :(.  I've deleted the past exchange, so let's try to be civil to each other and refrain from the profanity--for godssake this thread is about audio circuit distortion.   ::)  Ian:  If you get that setup from RS, let us know how well it works.

Re: What's with the horrible noise from the headph

I had started a post on this very same issue about 3 months ago when I first purchased my 100a. I, too, was appalled at the horrible hiss coming from the headphone jack. I posted here as well as 2-pop, and initial responses confirmed that this is indeed a UNIVERSAL problem with the 100a (though many users didn't really notice it until pointed out - hard to believe given how deafening it was). In raising the floor going from the 100 to the 100a, our friends at Panny bumped up the gain significantly. It took several helpful postings to confirm that I did not have a bum camera and that this was in fact a common issue.

You would think when putting out a product of such tremendous accomplishments as the DVX100a, that something as silly as audio hiss in the headphone jack would be addressed, but clearly that is not the case. The audio off the heads is clean. Cleaner than any of the prosumer level cameras I have shot with (certainly about a million times better than the PD-150/170). But it is annoyance I have learned to deal with. Monitoring off of the jacks in the field is not as reliable (with respect to absolute fidelity), you just have to trust that the audio is clean. And so far my experience has been that 100% of the time, the audio is clean. The audio guys I work with go off the mixer and give me an OK. I go off the headphone jacks ONLY to make sure there is no weird artifact introduced post mixer into the camera. In any case, after a few weeks of working with this bad boy, you'll learn to forgive (if not forget) it... which I think is what Oleg is trying to say... either that or "**** off." I'm not entirely sure.

This is one of my favorite forums and the help here from its contributing members is extremely helpful. On that note, I remember some time in the past where there would be little complaint about dowloading files from the internet at blazing 56K speeds courtesy of AOL. Just because something would be great 10 years ago doesn't mean we should thank our lucky stars that things are any better today, or that anything far improved cannot be held to an even higher expectation. Let's keep it civil and helpful people.
