What's up with YouTube

Okay, I get everyone has the right to make a buck, but dang near every video I watch these days has an ad attached up front. I know I can skip it after 5 seconds, but it's freakin' irritating to have soooo many. 80% ?? Maybe 30-ish % if I'm watching a play list, and get this ... I was watching a long-play sax music collection, maybe an hour long of various songs, and up pops an ad mid-may. That's right, mid-may. How'd they do that?

I think there are several things going on. 1) people think they can make a buck off their youtube videos... 2) I thought I had read that if a copyright owner determines you have put up their material, they can put an ad in front of it, and get the bux. Since I read this some time ago, I could have taken it wrongly. But it would almost make sense... rather than sending a take down notice, accept the fact that some set of people are watching the clip, and get money for it...

But for the person who wants to monetize their 'brilliant work'... you get ads up front...

Update:
Ok, here's an old article on the subject:

Both statements are correct with one small caveat regarding #1. It's not that "people think they can make a buck..." - it's more like "people make a buck..." Google's ToC does not allow for disclosing actual numbers especially statistics. But you may be surprised if you actually try to do something like this (if you know how).

I do it, and I am not ashamed of it. It's not different from advertising on cable TV. For those who do not like it, Vimeo perhaps is a better alternative.

Try using an alternative service that interfaces with Youtube to bypass the ads, like:

http://www.fmgem.com

or

http://www.tubalr.com/

or better yet, try Soundcloud. Or this great site that interfaces with Soundcloud - http://mycloudplayers.com/

No that's not true. You cannot bypass ads. To make sure that I am 100% correct, I just tried a YouTube video on fmgem.com where I knew the add should appear - it appears all right. All they do is using Google API to embed videos in their pages. BTW, any YouTube poster can disallow embedding.

I FrickeN refuse to make my viewers sit through an ad on youtube. I feel honored that any one person is willing to watch my work as it is, So if these corporations that give me zero funds towards gear, and the time to make the vids, think that i'm going to let them inconvienence the small amount of viewers I have, well,,,, they can go fk themselves, that's how strongly I feel about it. So yeah, I agree with the OP, I can't stand that the corporate world has invaded youtube and exploit peoples work for next to nothing, It's sad to me so many sell out for literally pennies in most cases to these multi billion dollar companies. If your one that feels there's nothing wrong with advertising for these companies, then have at it. I'm not going to unless they want to pay me for my time, and the rental of the gear it takes to make a video. just my 2cents.

Well folks may not like the ads. But try to get your video widely seen without using Youtube. You just won't get the same level of exposure. So the way I see it is the ads are the price you pay to use Youtube. People can take it or leave it.

You have to get A LOT of views in order to get ANYTHING on YouTube.

It's a good thing if it helps people and companies generate income though. I think a payment option, where you pay to use YouTube without getting ads might be a good idea, might be a good idea though. Guess we'll see what happens with the payment subscription plans.

Who on earth doesn't skip the ad after 5 seconds? What's the point? They'd be better off making a 5 second ad.

...Some ads like the dreaded CopperTone sun products ad can't be skipped, so you are stuck listening to the same crappy ad over and over at maximum volume for 15+ seconds. ( I now have a secret desire to smash CopperTone products with a hammer after being force-fed their crappy ad so many times )

Ads get annoying if I'm browsing music singles. I get that it's the cost of getting something for "free" though.
On larger videos like the full documentaries, the intro ads are forgotten about.
And yes, I've always "skipped" after 5 seconds (when possible) except for one laletly. It's a new one. I'll post it if possible later when I cross it again. Pretty good actually.

The point of youtube was for people to produce videos that others could watch for "free" They made vids becasuse they either had something to say, or create in the name of art, That's why it was such a huge success. It's only a matter of time before you will have to buy a membership to post or watch. Not the premise youtube was founded on. Welcome to the corporate takeover.

Problem with that is as soon as youtube charges a subscription, a new player can open up something for free. Competition is a *****.

The double edge sword that is the internet. But I think the percentages favor the "it's free" camp. We are so used to the internet that it sort of gets taken for granted that everything should just be available. YouTube (Google) has every right to monitize the whole thing because they bought it. If it gets to be too much then people will stop using it and Google will adjust. Corporate takeover or not, nobody wants to work for free, including the folks at YouTube.

I don't blame people for wanting to get some small return on the work they put in. It takes a lot of money to do these things. You Tube pays really bad. BllipTV has a 50/50 deal but even at that you need 100K hits to make $1900. That's not a lot of help with a web series that takes $10K minimally to get out there.

I'm for subscriptions, on demand, and streaming to the TV via Roku, etc. If this is the new frontier we're going to have some return for producing these things.

Vimeo has a "donate" option like open source software.

What would you pay not to suffer the ads?

I'm not sure who doesn't use Adblock (available for most popular browsers)...if you don't like ads, don't watch them. I don't even know they're there.

Why should art be free? Artists need to pay for rent and groceries as well. They also have kids to send to school.

If I remember correctly, the reason the ads were added to YouTube in the first place was that it wasn't creating revenue. When a company isn't creating revenue it's leaking money. Before long, it dies.

Bitching about ads on YouTube is kind of like listening to a street musician play a couple of songs and then say "What? I should pay him too?"
