What's this text effect called?

I think the most mainstream example of this is in the Ford F-150 commercials the past year or so.

AE would be perfectly suitable for this as it's just animation of 2D layers in 3D space. Though any motion graphics program will do.

I can't believe how big these things have gotten.

If you're going to do it, make it VERY interesting. There's so many now that simply completing one is like showering daily.

I actually just started my first kinetic text project this week. I worked for about 4 days for 10-12 hours a day for a 3 minute song, and when I finished it and rendered the final video out, I hated it. I threw it out and started over. Now it's a SHITLOAD more time consuming, but it looks 10x better.

Best advice I can give you is: STORYBOARD YOUR PROJECT!!!!

And when you're really ready visit The Elements of Typographic Style, Grid Systems in Graphic Design, Making and Breaking the Grid, and any other book on type, grids, and the like in design.

Video Copilot will not teach you anything about how to make a good kinetic type piece, only how to technically execute it, which anyone can do.
