What's the smallest audio bag I can get away with?

Hey,

So I did some opportunist buying last month, I picked up an Edirol R-44 on the cheap and I did the Rode NTG-3/Blimp deal, hurrah! But it means now suddenly I've loads more gear to carry and need to get a separate audio bag to carry them in!

To fit into the bag, I've got - Rode NTG-3, Rode NT4, Rode Blimp, 2xSenn G2's - Recs + Trans, Edirol R-44, cabling, headphones, batteries etc. I've also got a Boom pole though I don't think I'll use that much, but if there's an add-on to carry that that's be great!

The issue is as thus - I shoot a lot in urban environments, so it needs to be something discreet - no bright blue portabraces heh, theft etc is a real issue.

Also, I want something as small and compact as I can get away with, but also preferably with the plastic top/sides for easy changing of the settings - no having to take the gear out the bag etc as that's not discreet.

As it stands in my Domke F-3X bag I can get my 5d, R-44, 3 lenses, z-finder, 2 g2's, NT4 and all cabling - so basically I can fit a lot, and that's without laying anything on top of itself to cram it in - I'm sure I could get my NTG-3 in there too.

The blimp is another issue, I don't know if it's better to get a seperate bag that'll take that or if a dedicated audio bag is viable, or if the latter will introduce too much dead space which I don't want.

Either way if anyone has any advice that'd be awesome, merci!

p.s. oh and as a sidebar, if anyone know's of a hard case for the NT4 like the one that comes with the NTG-3, can they please link me to it, cheers!

What's the smallest audio bag I can get away with? = the next size up from the one you currently own and are cursing at...

Actually, I'd like to here some suggestions too as my gear has been steadily increasing, as well as the number of bags I have to lug around.

I would also be interested to hear what solutions people have come up with to hold the Rode NT4.

In my mind, I'm seeing something like the tube that comes with the NTG-3 but wider. I'm not sure such a thing actually exists though.

Hello Listers,

I recently agonized over the same issues. Being a little slow on the uptake, I had to realize that the bag you shoot with is not the bag you transport your entire kit in. So for me, I ended up with a small Petrol eargonizer which holds a mixer, small recorder, headphones, patch cables, etc. Then use something else to pack the other stuff you will get out as needed: mics, more cables, wind protection, wireless, batteries, etc. In my case, a Pelican case seemed the most secure, and is also moisture resistant.
