What's the Money *Really* Like?

So I'm kind of perplexed.

I hear over and over that film revenues have dried up for low-budget films. That the only people (for the most part) making any money in this business are big budgets and micro budgets.

But what about films in the $1M-$5M range? Films like this:

Where is the market for a film like this? It has no theatrical value. Are there enough dvd/streaming opportunities to recoup investment?

Just curious as to how so many of films of this ilk are being made despite dire industry revenue projections.

Or are many mistaken about the profitability of certain films?

Theres an Australian film called Red dog just released here, total budget 8 million AUD. Seems to be doing really well, with UK and US theatre release now a certainty as well. I think goes against the trend however and stars an american, Josh Lucas.

The film market IMO, the right film at the right time with the $ for marketing.

This will make cable rounds and DVD outlets that still remain...Redbox, etc. and wind up on Retail shelves. Also, foreign sales, this will make television and DVD overseas still.

A dvxuser's (Adam of the Corrado thread in User Films) movie made the top 10 DVD release sales chart last week. It was called Tactical Force

It was likely in the same budget range and stars Steve "Stone Cold" Austin...so obviously it has a niche audience but there didn't seem to be too much awareness (other than here) for the movie and it still moved units.

So, these titles will still garner revenue and likely in many cases make a profit.

There is no theatrical revenue listed for WAY OF WAR indicating there never was theatrical but DVD and all ancillary markets. Baseline Research can get you home video/DVD numbers but it costs ~$25 per report. There are no free sites for non theatrical revenue that I know of.

I also have to say, that I am always amazed at the number of producers/exec producers that are credited on movies in the $1M-$5M range:

The Way of War:

Robert Ballentine ... associate producer
James T. Bruce IV ... line producer: second unit
John Bullard ... executive producer
John Carter ... producer
William H. Dean ... executive producer
Bill Jarrell ... executive producer
Mark Joy ... producer
Jordan Kessler ... executive producer
Earle Martin ... executive producer
David E. Ornston ... executive producer
David Pomier ... producer
Richard Salvatore ... producer
Scott Schafer ... producer
Jeff M. Sliney ... consulting producer
Nick Thurlow ... executive producer
Todd Williams ... co-executive producer

Shot in La. probably for $3m or so so they got $1m back from that. I hope they sold more territories than imdb shows or it would have been a big bust.

Small world...I know Robert. He probably did UPM or even AD work on it as well.

And I would think that Robert actually has the proper credit as Associate under the terms of the PGA. I question the 5 credited as Producer and did they all perform the roles of the producer as defined by the PGA.
