Whats the greatest Zombie film of all time?

Wyrmwood. Hands down. It is a tired old genre, the 'queen of zombies' angle was just enough to freshen it some for me. And on the humour side, one word - Benny. Most of all it is the first movie in a long time that is a genuine drive in movie (the good kind, not the so-bad-its-good kind). I saw it at an outdoor cinema with a great audience and it was just a perfect night out. Best cinematic experience in a long long time.

I generally agree with all the picks made in this thread so far, especially Braindead. Up until Wyrmwood it was my favourite, treating the idea of zombification as more an embarrassing problem than a deadly one is hilarious.

They still have never improved up on the original Romeros: #1 Night of the Living Dead and #2 Dawn of the Living Dead.

When the Walking Dead came out, there was a lot of buzz, so I finally checked it out. Friends could not understand why I HATED it. The reason was extremely simple - they did NOTHING to bring anything fresh to the genre. OK, the creators called it a "tribute" to the originals, which I suppose is the explanation for the total ripoff of all the effects, but for all that, the crime is still there: nothing new.

Those two Romeros established the genre: the way the creatures moved, what killed them, what drove them, how they spread and multiplied, the moral choices for people trapped - the whole shebang. That's it. DONE. Since then you've had countless followups, but what new did they bring to the table? They still rest on the original invention and premise. Which, you know, would be fine, if they did something particularly better with those elements. But I don't see it. The Romeros had incredible drama and tension - and that has not been exceeded. So, to me, it's an easy answer. Funnily enough even when people try a new tone, like f.ex. a comedic take on zombies, even that's been done by Romero in Day of the Dead where he introduced comedic elements (though it's a notably weaker film compared to the first two).

I'm waiting for someone to do something new and notable with this genre. Hasn't been done yet. "28 days later" is something slightly different, as those are not zombies, so I don't really count it.

Funny that the one who sums it up so well is called OLD CORPSE!

I agree with this summation - except I did like the FIRST season of Walking Dead because it actually dealt with the concept realistically - and that's what made it scary. It picked up where the original Night of the Living Dead left off and showed us what it would be like to actually confront and deal with those situations; when it's your loved ones that turned, how to get through a day and find food and fresh water, to get a decent night's sleep, what it might be like to live with the walkers day after day, learning about how to survive even surrounded by them, how social bonds break down or are formed in the face of such an awful reality.
This is what that first season did so well - make it real.
Interestingly, the very first Night of the Living Dead managed to touch on almost all of those concepts just in 2 hours.
Almost no zombie movie since then really did that so I found them dumb and boring.
I liked a couple of the humorous ones, especially Shawn of the Dead, but really most of the funny ones are parodies, and I think that is really a different genre.
