What's the best wireless software out there for Windows?

It's no secret that wireless (except for the blessed few) is a quirky technology. When my wireless goes out, I have no idea why. Sometimes it's my modem, sometimes it's my router. And sometimes I have no idea why pages won't load. Sometimes I just have to sit there and wait until it decides to connect again. It's extremely frustrating that this so called "technology's" main problem is solved by... LEANING DOWN AND PHYSICALLY UNPLUGGING THE DEVICE, WAITING TEN SECONDS, THEN REPLUGGING IT!

Is there anyone out there besides me who thinks this is totally ridiculous? This is technology??? Shouldn't you be able to control all of your wireless router's/internet problems from the atual computer itself?

Anyway, I was wondering if there's some software out there that people use, that allows you to really have great control over your wireless. Something that actully tells you why your wireless isn't loading, instead of just getting a page that says "Problem loading page", and then helps you fix it.

Any suggestions?

Generally you do have that control. Your modem/router should have an IP address allowing you to log into it and make adjustments. I'm not sure what your exact issue is, but it sounds like a hardware or even ISP issue to me.

The documentation for your hardware should explain further, but usually you simply open up IE or whatever browser you want, type the IP of your device (such as 192.168.0.1) and get a config screen for the device.

are you using cable or DSL ?
if DSL maybe you need a new DSL filter/splitter on phone line ?
don't know if cable uses a filter ?
what make router/wireless ?

try hard wire from computer into router/switch ( CAT 5 cable) -do you loose internet connection ?

all of this happes so sporadically (going off and on whenever it chooses) that to test it is difficult. I'd think it was just me but it happens to most of my friends as well. And when I call the wireless router (belkin), outside of guiding me through a long and arduous process in the wireless config screen that I would never be able to replicate unless I went to IT school or became Einstein, their solution is "unplug the router. now wait for ten seconds...." ARe you kidding me???

Anyway, I know about the config screen. Problem is, it's not very user-friendly and I don't really know what to do when I'm in there (since I'm not even sure why my wireless stopped in the first place) I wanted to know if there was sort of a "wireless software for dummies" out there that managed your wireless connection for you. If not, they should make one. It would be worth a lot of money.

If your wireless is dead, how would you connect to the router from the computer?

Or do you mean the wired/wireless kind?

Sounds more like an issue between the computer and access point, but hard to tell unless you can ping devices in the path. Perhaps a search of deja.com might provide some ideas for a resolution.

Do you have other 2.4 GHz wireless devices in your home that could be causing interference, such as a wireless telephone?

Or other people in the neighborhood. Let's face it, hardly anyone switches from Channel 6 (the default on all the wireless systems I've seen), so the band might get crowded at times.

Try Channel 2.
