What's The Best Way To Work With P2 and Color 1.5?

I am about to start shooting a no-budget feature and was wondering what's the best workflow for working with HVX200 footage and color correction with Apple's Color application (The New 1.5 Version). Specifically, I was wondering if it's best to 'up-convert' the footage to a more color-friendly codec that has 4:4:4 color space so there is more room to play around with the color information. Or does this take too much of a hit on quality by introducing an extra conversion step into the mix?

So far I have done simple and quick 'correcting' with Color by just 'round-tripping' the original DVCPro HD footage... but have noticed that the footage gets noisy real quickly by the time it comes back from Color and I export it from FCP.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

As long as you are converting to a "larger" codec, then you shouldn't see any quality hit. From DVCPro HD, your best choices are ProRes 422 (HQ), the new ProRes 4444 or Uncompressed.

You can convert all your footage at the start, but a simpler solution for you might be to send DVCPro HD and then let Color render out to one of the higher codecs for you at the end. That way your footage won't get re-encoded back to DVCPro and degrade your footage.

You can change the render/export codec in the Prjct Properties in Setup.

Wether or not this will make a difference (vs staying in DVCPro) depends on the extent of your color correction.
