What's the best way to get more sound in FCP7 from an interview done at a low level?

I have not used FCP 7 or previous iterations in a long while. You can try duplicating the clips several times. It may make more sense to do this separately, then mix them down into one track on export, then reimport the clip. There can be some synchronization issues, but it is usually not too bad. I believe you should have a gain filter as well. FCP X has the gain filter and it is serviceable. Sometimes it is hard to increase the gain and not get a lot of background distortion. Compression may be needed then, or potentially adjusting with the equalizer. I hope this makes sense. I am by no means the audio expert.

In Final Cut Pro 3, my best result was from applying the audio filter called Compression or Compressor. When you first put it on, its ratio is 1, which does nothing. Try 2 or 3.

I'd give sweetening the audio a try as already mentioned with some filters targeting the 1kHz range.
Then create extra audio tracks (one or two directly underneath the existing audio track.
When played back the two or three should sound as one. This may have been your idea!!
