what's the best pro and consumer computer monitor for editing?

I'm not finding much in the forums. I need to buy a computer monitor to edit, and hopefully do some color correction on. What is the best professional option, and what is the best consumer option?
What should one be looking out for in making this purchase?
Why is in-plane switching preferred?

Thank you

You don't want to rely on a computer monitor (any computer monitor) for color correction unless your work will never be seen on anything but a computer monitor. If you want it to be seen on a TV of any kind, then you need to previewing to that kind of screen when you color correct.

Another option is, you can edit on any monitor and have a small pro monitor to preview it on. Manhattan LCD has a lot of nice options. http://www.manhattanlcd.com/

Big pro monitors like 20" are crazy expensive. Dell has a few 'proish' monitors for around $300 and you can get a color correcting device to tune it - or tune it yourself with a little research.
