What's the best NLE? (PC)

I'm currently using Vegas 7.0 and am aware that it is oooold. I'm shooting SD DV and recording directly to my computer. Vegas 7 has some obvious shortcomings, the most glaring is the fact that it is old and won't flip the footage for me as I capture it (35mm adapter...).

What NLE should I look to go to? Right now I'm thinking adobe, but would love to get some input.

[I utfse'd but got mostly old results, this question is ever-changing]

There's no one best -- there's best for purpose and best for the individual user. But there's no overall best. You should download trials of everything and put them to work for your purposes. Then, you can see what works best for you.

Great, let me get started downloading and trying every single NLE.

If you want to find the right one for you, it's pretty much what you have to do. People can make suggestions all day long, but at the end of the day, only you know what works best for you, your style of thinking and learning, and your purposes.

As I said, there is no overall "best." All anyone can do is tell you what THEY like the best. They all do pretty much the same things.

You're editing SD footage, so if you plan to stay in that realm, I'm not sure what upgrading will get you exactly.

Can you give more examples of where you think that Vegas 7 has shortcomings? I don't think that any NLE will flip the footage for you as you capture it.

Not really. Vegas 7 is a few versions out, but its feature set is pretty current. The only thing it really lacks is native support for more current HD codecs (new ones popping up all the time). Other than that, it's got the same stuff as everything else.

Most people would say either Adobe Premiere Pro or Sony Vegas. There is of course the almighty Avid, but my 2 cents - Avid is overly complicated and not the best choice for most freelance editors.

I've used both Adobe Premiere Pro and Sony Vegas... Premiere makes the transition to an industry standard like FCP much easier, and works in a similar fashion. Vegas is more of an editor for people who aren't really editors (YIKES! Bring on the Flame War! But first, know I say that with the realization that there are some very good editors using Vegas producing stuff that looks better than people who cut in FCP or Adobe - ultimately is about the artist, not the tool). Really, you will hear a great deal of debate between Vegas VS Premiere. Why not just try a demo of each?

If you want to learn an industry standard type of editing, get the new Adobe Premiere Pro 5. It is your best bet on the PC. Second to that, I'd say Vegas, and you could also check out Edius.

I used Premiere Pro for years before switching to FCP. I tried Vegas, not a big fan. Never tried Edius.

Literally the best advice in this thread.

Adobe Premiere is my favorite since I've been an adobe kid since high school.
