What's the best Deck to get ...for the HVX??

Question:
I'm looking into purchasing the HVX200... My system is currently set up for Mini DV and I was looking into getting a Mini DV deck as well . Just looking to get organized with all the importing and exporting.
I do understand that if I get the HVX half my problem is solved being that I will get either the firestore or most likely the cineporter (reading up on David's thread, if it is coming out anytime soon)
- my question is when transferring over to HD... What is the major form of exporting that you guys use for clients, including Television stations?
I currently shoot a job on DVX100a and transfer to Betacam for the stations.
Will I be able leave my transfer woes behind with this jump to HVX?

I was looking into these two devices, and wanted to hear feedback on them or any other that I'm not aware of .

JVC DR-DX5S DVD and Mini-DV Video Recorder Combo, Built-in 250GB Hard Drive, DV Connections, VCR+ - Records to DVD-RAM, DVD-R/W - Mini-DV
-my concern with this is that it's not an HD DVD)
OR
BR-HD50UJVC BR-HD50U Compact HDV/DV Format Video Recorder with DVCAM Playback, 50Hz/60Hz Compatibility, Cross Converter 1080i/720p/480i Output
-Don't no much about this device)

But my main concern is the exporting format for clients. Is it mostly all DVD's for your clients. I saw Berry's concern with getting the footage off the cineporter for clients, same day. But don't think that will work with the Networks here.
Also that the only one that I can find that close to what I'm looking for is that JVC DR-DX5S only because it gives me a DV deck and DVD recording capabilities, but the fact that it's JVC has me worried. Knowing that it's not truly built to be compatible with the HVX ....

Anyone out there got information/ experience that can put my seraching mind at ease... to make a good business investment - Thanks

From my understanding, the high-end clients such as Discovery Channel and similar broadcast markets typically take delivery of production footage on HDCAM and DVCPRO-HD tapes. However, with P2 and similar disc based storage solutions being used more prevalently to accommodate storing aquisition footage in it's original native framerate (24p footage has to be telecined in a similar fashion as film when it is transferred to tape), I think there is a growing acceptance of taking delivery of production footage in forms other than tape. Maybe not so much for the finished product but I think this is a growing concern when delivering archival footage.

I think with the higher end markets we will be seeing a trend to accept delivery of footage on disc and other digital storage rather than from tape only.

You may want to consider using an outside post facility to meet current needs when transferring to HDCAM or DVCPRO-HD tape (and also other formats - Digital Betacam, DVCAM - for lower end markets as well) and holdout for future interest in solid state or disc based storage when it comes to spending your own money :) ... especially if you're shooting with a camera like the HVX200.

Thank you John for giving me some insight. With all the talk about Hard drives, disc etc... that was my very question.
Just left out the HD Tapes as a factor.

The cable networks each have different delivery requirements.

Discovery requires HDCam or D5.
They do not accept non-tape delivery.

In addition, Discovery has stated that they are not yet comfortable with non-tape acquisition due to the potential diifficulty down the road of rebuilding shows from the original EDL's (most networks require you to give them the EDL's plus all the original media if it is a show they have commissioned).

They are saying that non-tape formats such as P2 must be copied to tape so that the source timecodes in the EDL's actually come from an easy to find and capture format.

Frequently their written specs are somewhat negotiable depending on the situation.

Hey Sproketz, do you have a deck that you would reccomend for the HVX... to take your footage from P2 , cineporter etc... to HD Tape?

The AJ-HD1400 would work great with the HVX system. If you wish HDCAM or D5, then you would need some form of capture card with SDI output to bump up to HDCAM or D5.
