What kind of relationship is typical between the AC and the Gaffer on set? Been working on an indie project and we've been short handed at times so I've been pitching in but I figure this is not typical.
as a gaffer i have a close working relationship with the whole camera dept.
they can give me advice on final camera blocking.
they are looking at the set from the camera angle so will see things i dont.
if the dp and operator are not at the camera i can get permission to check the scene thru the
viewfinder or monitor from the ac.
on indie films everybody pitches in to help, because crews are small thats the way it is.
i am happy to have the help on set,
but never walk away from the camera if it is set up.
always ask before you do anything, i always ask to look thru the camera. thats being polite......
Like Ian said, On small Indie films, everyone pitches in usually. So it's not unusual to communicate with other occupations. On a big money production where it's union. It's much different .
Think of it like a union construction site where's there's painters, drywallers, and carpenters. They may communicate because they have to, in order to get the job done. But when it comes to encroaching on another jobs territory, you better have a damn good reason, and with permission from the other depts HEAD guy. Otherwise you will be in the unemployment line with the others that overstepped their bounds. Like the above poster stated, ASK IF YOUR UNSURE!
remember that even on small shoot your primary responsibility is the camera. so even when you have set-up the camera and watch a poor lonely grip struggling to move 5 c-stands you might want to pitch in which is fine as long as you are COMPLETELY sure that nothing will happen to the camera. A shoot can go on without that extra c-stand or a light but it cannot continue if the camera tips over and breaks. Have seen it happen way too many times so now even on small shoot i try to bang into the AC "stay with the camera!"
